Today’s world has faced radical changes in almost every respect of society owing to the rapid advancement of digital technologies. Such changes have appeared as new expressions using different forms and methods from those in the past. A soundscape aims at innumerous sounds existing around us as the objects of music; thus, it has an important meaning in terms of the scope and subject matters of music. If we know a little about a recorder and a sound editing technology, any of us will be able to compose music using a soundscape. This study aims to help today’s elementary school students to perform creative music-making activity more actively in class at school by applying sounds utilizing digital media musically. With this aim, the study reviewed the meaning and educational application method of a soundscape, and looked into the meaning of ‘music-making’ newly proposed in the revised music curriculum for 2007 as well as the effectiveness of music-making utilizing digital media. After reviewing the developmental characteristics of music in elementary school students in higher school years, the study took a look into a soundscape and music-making in relation to praxial philosophy. Based on the above contents, aiming at 31 sixth graders in one class in D Elementary School located in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul with a theme of ‘music-making based on soundscape’, the study designed preparatory learning for the nine units and an in-depth learning program for the three units, and offered the programs in the class, and then, analyzed the result. Preparatory learning was composed of activity for cultivating an interest in a sound, sound editing activity, music-making, and music appreciation. Students completely made music of which the length is less than 1 minute and with which they can easily associate with auditory images. During this process, not only surrounding sounds which had been recorded but also existing creative music were also used together. Next, the study undertook survey research so as to discover students’ understanding of and interest in class, and pursued in-depth learning with a more abstract theme aimed at three students who were fairly interested in sound collection and editing activity. Students made and recorded sounds in person using surrounding objects and musical instruments or certain parts of their bodies. Also, they created music which was about three-minute long with a theme of ‘Dokdo (island)’ through the variation of those sounds in many ways. The meaningful contents in terms of music education discovered in the class include the following. First, students discovered new sounds while having an interest in the environment of sounds around them, and discovered musical elements in sounds. Second, students got to know about new type of recently emerging music, and raised their understanding of such music. Third, students came to learn that there are various marking techniques in light of the expression of music creation. Fourth, students experienced and recognized that there is an infinite potential in music expressions by learning about how to express their musical thinking with new sounds. Based on the above, the study proposes the following. First, research into diverse educational application methods of a soundscape is necessary. Second, it is necessary to prepare human resources and physical resources for an understanding of contemporary music. Third, detailed research and practice regarding ‘music-making utilizing digital media’ in connection with a curriculum other than the music curriculum are required along with discretionary activity or creative experience activity. Thanks to the advancement of today’s newly emerging diverse digital technologies, some methods used for music also have attempted different changes from those in the past. Like contemporary musicians who attempt compositions with new sounds, it is necessary also for music education to attempt new contents and methods differentiated from existing ones. In this regard, music-making based on a soundscape uses digital media along with an interest in a sound which is the intrinsic nature of music that a soundscape itself has; thus, it will be able to help students who live in our time to develop an interest in and to be motivated for learning about music.
