ABSTRACT
Works of art can be evaluated from an aesthetic point of view and from a moral one as well. I discuss how moral characteristics that are found within a work of art are surfaced and how they are related to aesthetic characteristics that are found within it, in its creation, deliverance, and appreciation. Questions like "if one were to morally evaluate a work of art, what would his/her evaluation amount to" is to answered in this dissertation. More specially, I discuss how aesthetic value that is found within a work of art is intrinsically related to its moral value, and various views about the relationship between the aesthetic and moral values that are found within a work of art. It is to be discussed as follows.
Chapter 2 investigates the interrelated nature between life and arts in an ever-changing media and art forms. It is to be assumed that art is closely related to human environment, and new media is one such environment. The advent of digital technologies and the development of communication technologies, especially in the direction particular to 21st century as interactive art, certainly give new modes of perception to the artists themselves and their audiences/appreciators provided the assumption. Volatile nature of human identity and life ensued by these new modes of perceiving works of art certainly allows for discussions of various topics in the tradition of humanities.
Chapter 3 discusses the relationship between moral characteristics and aesthetic characteristics that are found in art criticisms, especially within the context of creating works of art and appreciating them. I first note that those characteristics play an important role in the criticisms. I then report the research results, with their limitations, on the nature of the relationship between moral and aesthetic characteristics.
Chapter 4 seeks out an alternative view to the views that I found wanting. My criticism of previous research results, especially the ones found domestically, forces a new direction that is proposed by Gaut. His proposal, it is argued, allows for a more reasonable classification of different views on the issue.
Chapter 5 concludes the dissertation, and it furthers the discussion by considering recent development: immoralism that seems fashionable in the circle of art criticism, and Gaut's contextualism. In the end, I am sympathetic to moralism that is similar to that of Gaut's.
