With advances in media technology, English language proficiency has become an important skill for maintaining competitiveness in the global education and job markets. While English has become a global language, it cannot be separated from Western culture, and indeed it is this association with the concept of Western freedom and opportunity as well as globalization which, at least in part, has made English acceptable as the language of business and science. As a consequence, the English language classroom gives teachers a unique environment for world cultural education, which, unfortunately, has been far too incidental in the past. This thesis explores the ideas which teachers can use during cultural education in addition to expressions, vocabulary, compositions in English. Teachers should be teaching students to appreciate diversity and cultural hybridization. The aim is to find effective pedagogical methods to teach culture in the EFL classroom and effective activities based on a variety of video clips. Ultimately, this paper is to help Korean middle school students to realize the importance of culture in learning English and to experience effective ways to learn English. Thus this thesis can let the students participate in globalization as people who are prepared to participate in the global community. Through this research, students will get interesting cultural knowledge and right hybrid of cultural experiences. This research will be helpful for teachers who want to teach culture in EFL classroom in middle schools, high schools, even in universities, hopefully. This paper is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 explains why this paper focuses on cultural teaching in EFL classrooms and what the ultimate goals for this thesis are and explains the research questions which present the basic frame of this paper. Chapter 2 describes the theoretical background for cultural teaching and critical approaches to culture, language, and media literacy. Chapter 3 explains participants, method procedures, data analysis, data collection, validation, and limitations. Chapter 4 presents results and discussions about the research questions related to each lesson. Findings are summarized and analyzed and then discussed respectively. Lastly chapter 5 comes to a conclusion and depicts the limitations and suggests further research directions.
