Abstract Cheonggye-cheon, which is a stream running across the heart of Seoul Metropolitan city, was restored in 2005, and it is providing a corridor as wildlife passages, adjusting functions of microclimate that alleviates urban heart islands phenomena, boardwalks and trails, and a diversity of recreational functions such as cultural events as an ecotone linking its nearby terrestrial ecosystem to aquatic ecosystem. This study aims at drawing an effective management plan of an urban restoration stream through the research results of the change of the overall florae, appearance aspects of the flora by section, change of invasive species and planted species, and hazard species of ecosystem over the past 5 years, and suggesting basic data for a long-term eco-management. As for the change of the flora for the past 5 years at Cheonggye-cheon, the total number of species has gradually increased with 328 species in 2006, 446 species in 2007, 444 species in 2008, 471 species in 2009 and 510 species in 2010. Looking into the change of the flora by section, a fewer number of species were investigated in Section 1(upper streams) and 2(mid-upper streams) than Section 3(mid-down streams) and 4(down streams), which is judged to result from the limit to plant growth space in Section 1 and 2 in comparison with Section 3 and 4 where there appears the micro-topography such as the relatively wide riverside of the Han River, embankment slope and sand bar, etc. Looking into the research year having a great changing trend, a fewer number of species were investigated in Section 2 than Section 1 in 2006, but since the year 2007, Section 2 have shown a steady upward trend by virtue of the increase in invasive species and planted species through the development of double section. Besides. after 2008, there appeared the increase in the number of species by about 40 because of the development of artificial wetlands and flowering plants garden in Section 4, for two years of 2009 and 2010. Looking into the invasive species and planted species, in case of the former, its number of species has increased from 233 in the initial period of restoration to 330, showing the increase by 67 species while planted species showed the increase by 115 species from 95 species in the early period of restoration to 210 species. Particularly, in case of invasive species, annual and biennial herbs dominated in the early period of restoration, but with the lapse of time, the invasive species have kept up a certain number and the number of species and ratio of perennial herbs have increased, and looking into such results, it is judged that the flora of Cheonggye-cheon has gotten into the gradually stabilized stage in the vegetation changing stage. In case of alien species[naturalized species], it showed a downward trend on the whole in its naturalized ratio of 23.6% to 21.4% between 2006 and 2008, but after 2009, there appeared a sharp increase in the naturalized ratio of alien species marking 22.0% ~24.3%. Such a result is judged to be attributable to the fact as follows: First, there was a lot of inflow of alien species which were dominant in adaptability to environmental change right after the restoration of the Cheonggye-cheon in 2006, and afterwards, its increasing speed decreases to show a downward trend on the whole until 2008, but due to the development of wetlands and flowering plants garden in 2009, there was the inflow of alien species consequent on environmental change in the same way as the initial period of restoration of the Cheonggye-cheon. The florae of the Cheonggye-cheon have shown diverse changes for the past 5 years, but the planted species introduced from managerial aspects have produced the effect in enhancing biodiversity and providing the beauty of the landscapes. However, this researcher judges that there is a need for management in preparation against the anticipated damage by natural disasters like heavy rainfall, and there is also a need for intensive management of the alien species showing a steady increasing trend and the currently discovered hazard species of ecosystem. Among the species which have been investigated for 5 years, this study selected the 12 priority management species which include 5 species of hazard species of ecosystem and 7 species of the vine which are fast in reproduction speed and interrupt photosynthesis. This study suggested the four target species for the management plan among the selected 12 priority management species such as Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatio and Ambrosia trifica which could do harm to human body at a stream where there are a large floating population like the Cheonggye-cheon, and Humulus japonicus and Sicyos angulatus that cover a wide area at a nearby stream with their good reproductive rate, and interrupt photosynthesis, potentially having an adverse effect on sub-vegetation and planted species. This study is aimed at providing the basic data on the change of the flora at urban restoration streams through the change of the flora that has appeared at the Cheonggye-cheon for the past 5 years, and this study discovered that its function as a biotic habitat is steadily improving through the observation of diverse spaces such as the micro-topography like a sand bar which was naturally formed after its restoration. Accordingly, this researcher judges that it will be of important significance to examine the further structural change of the Cheonggye-cheon in combination with the changing aspects of the flora before/after a flood, and this study results will be estimated to play a role of a model case of the retention & promotion plan of stream biodiversity, fostering and restoration of a habitat, vegetation introduction and its management plan, and applications of management or not after stream restoration through its subsequent combination research.
