Korean funeral is dominated by burial due to deeply-rooted Confucianism, and, around the country, the regions that are considered propitious according to feng-shui have graveyard. Furthermore, the average area per 1 graveyard is about 30㎡, which is nearly equivalent to living space per capita(2010), 33㎡, and it must be improved in comparison to about average 3.3㎡ in developed countries. In other countries, presidents and celebrities take the lead in being buried in a limited space at a public cemetery, but, in Korea, they apply their status even after death, so the grave area of head of states are on average 264㎡, and celebrities 26㎡ at a national cemetery. In addition, private graveyards that take the majority of illegal graveyards mostly exceed the limited size, and wealthy people are creating luxurious graveyards in the supposedly propitious places. Land is a natural resource that humans cannot produce, and once misused, it is difficult to recover or change the use of the land. Therefore, the optimal use of the land is meaningful for all of us. In that respect, one of the most important problems that Korea, a country with high population density, must solve is to examine and find ways to efficiently use the limited land in different aspects. Especially, in Korea, graveyards take about 1 percent of the total usable area and lands about 1.2 times bigger than Yeoeuido is used for such purpose every year. Considering that the urbanization rate of the territory where about 50 million people are living is just 6 percent, such high occupation of graveyards is a serious problem. Currently, Korea is rapidly changing into a hyper-aging society, and the lands that must be used for houses, or industrial or commercial complexes with the increase of population and development of industries are used as graveyards, and the social demand for graveyards is increasing due to increased population. After the government has encouraged cremation and cinerarium, the cremation rate in Korea has increased from 7.0% in 1971 to 53.6% in 2001, 59.4% in 2002, 52.6% in 2005, 61.9% in 2008, 65.0% in 2009, and, in 2010, the national cremation rate exceeded 70% - especially, the cremation rate in Busan is over 83.5% and is expected to reach 85.9% in 2020. As the cremation encouragement policy is rapidly spreading, cinerarium seemed to be considered and settled as the only option after cremation, but it is already creating another environmental problem. Meanwhile, according to the comprehensive survey on funeral methods, respondents favored park-type facilities after cremation, but showed NIMBY phenomenon by opposing the facilities to be installed near their houses. To solve this problem, the government must respond to it actively, and must make new plans so that, in reality that emphasizes individuals’ interest and rights, more systematic and analytic policies and support can satisfy and persuade one another. In that respect, this study collected and reviewed various data including funeral-related laws, government report, statistics, academic journals, papers, and foreign literature and cases. The spatial scope of this research to understand funeral culture was focused on Busan, and time on late February, 2012. Total 13 questions were constructed for 409 people who responded to survey to research their perception on funeral culture. Especially, to understand the current funeral methods, the study looked into characteristics and preference for funeral culture, and empirical analysis and result from the respondents. The empirical analysis was conducted by cross tabulation, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study show that respondents prefer cremation for funeral, and natural burial after cremation. Complying with such demand of the society, and considering that the land does not exclusively belong to the current generation but is a previous property for the upcoming generations, the study aims to help to actively utilize funeral methods suitable for our culture and current to protect the nature and environment and effectively use the land.
