As anxieties about global warming and the depletion of petroleum resources are growing worldwide, many research groups have a great interest in diesel engines with their high thermal efficiency and low CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission well-known as the factor of ‘Global Warming’. However, it is established facts that a larger amount of NOx (nitrogen oxides) and PM (particulate matter) are generated in locally excessive combustion temperature regions and fuel rich regions in diesel combustion. Exhaust gas after-treatment systems are often used to reduce the NOx and PM emissions below the required regulation levels, but it cannot be a feasible long-term solution because of its complexity, high cost, and inefficient performance at low load conditions. Therefore, getting down the peak combustion temperature in order to reduce NOx emissions and making a better air-fuel mixture to minimize diesel particulate matter formation in the combustion process are very important. PCCI (premixed charge compression ignition) combustion has the potential to achieve such conditions with its attractive advanced combustion process which a largely premixed homogeneous mixture is ignited simultaneously across the whole combustion chamber with eliminating diffusion flame. And in this way it can has advantages of both a high thermal efficiency and the emission reduction of NOx and PM. However it has also got some problems such as a limited operating range and higher fuel consumption produced by the difficulty of ignition timing control and fuel impingement against the cylinder wall. Add more it is a fact realizing combustion of fully premixed charge with compression ignition is difficult, especially using conventional diesel engine systems. Therefore, in this study an injection strategy of multiple early and single main type was used for a 4-cylinder diesel engine adopting a piezoelectric injector system. Triple injection was applied for the early injection to reduce the wall wetting and to increase the premixed charge rate, and the main combustion was controlled with another single injection near TDC (top dead center). In addition, the compression ratios were changed with retarding the intake camshaft angle to control the whole combustion phase for improving engine efficiency and in this case, there were not any changes of the expansion ratio and other engine structures. For the first, injection quantity and rate were measured then the characteristics of injected fuel spray behavior and penetration were investigated using visualization test to get the basic information of the injector. Secondly, the cam profile and the valve lift were measured then a steady state flow test was conducted to identify the flow coefficient and the swirl ratio of the cylinder head according to various angles of swirl control valve. Finally, the combustion and emission characteristics of the 4-cylinder PCCI engine were investigated with controlling injection timings, injected fuel mass ratios and compression ratios in various engine operating conditions. In conclusion, PCCI combustion partially achieved with an injection strategy using triple early and single main combined injections, and then the optimized injection conditions were able to reduce NOx and PM emissions simultaneously. However, ignition of the early injection took a place prior to TDC that generally causes a decrease in engine efficiency, therefore fuel consumption increased. The ignition timing and whole combustion could be controlled with reduced compression ratios by using a technique of RIVT (retarded intake valve timing). Consequently, it was allowed to prevent the high fuel consumption while the emissions were being kept low. This research works are expected to provide valuable information and solution contributing to the development of advanced combustion engines and the results should be helpful to optimize and expand the operating range of PCCI combustion to be applied to the conventional diesel engine system.
