While making even a simple painting like scribbling, we take pleasure and delight over unhappy feelings by relieving tension and stress, and sometimes experience the catharsis regaining mental stability by easing painful emotion. Arts activity is a course on creative work. Art therapy is based on the idea that such creative work can help us to alleviate anxiety, to purify spirit, to identify and restore the worth of our existence, and therefore to gain the remedial influence of art. Historically, through creative work, a great number of artists in emotional conflicts have expressed the conflicts and sublimated them into the arts. Of various kinds of art works, a self-portrait especially reflects one’s psychological inner side as well as physical appearance, and it is generally said that the painters who draw plenty of self-portraits tend to explore their inner sides in depth and to be highly interested in emotional conflicts. Frida Kahlo(1907~1954), one of the painters who clung to a self-portrait, was born in Mexico. She bore during life not only the physical pain from polio and a traffic accident but also the emotional pain from her husband’s constant affairs. Elevating the pains into the arts, she finished 143 pieces of artworks, 55 pieces of which (over one third of all) were self-portraits in which she poured her dramatic life and pain. This thesis aims to study the therapeutic value of art that we can get in the process of presenting ourselves, expressing our inner world, and finally sublimating the inner conflict, based on analyzing Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits which keep the trace of her worry and introspection from the art therapeutic point of view. Frida Kahlo repeatedly expressed her physical and emotional agonies on self-portraits for all her life. Through the self-portrait works, she emitted intense feelings by the imagery of trauma, and healed the wounds by the process of catharsis. At the same time, she could objectively contemplate and control her emotion and trouble by looking at the symbolic portrayals from imagery of the problems embedded in her subconscious. Therefore, she could achieve the art therapeutic effect by reestablishing the impaired ego and developing the healthy ego, while she observed and expressed her inner side through a self-portrait work. This study on Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait, which is not from an art historical perspective of other studies so far but from an art therapeutic perspective, is to show how the creative work of art relieves one’s psychological conflict and furthermore helps to restore one’s ego through her self-portraits. It is hoped that this thesis will highlight the art therapeutic value that assists true understanding of oneself and emotional healing, and will be able to contribute to research in a relevant field.
