With the recent continuous growth of world economy, energy demand is increasing rapidly. As more than 80% of world energy consumption depends on the fossil fuel such as oil and coal, global society is experiencing serious air pollution and weather change because of the destroyed environments. Related to this, many countries in the world including Korea tried to replace the existing fossil fuels with infinite, clean, cheap new regeneration energy and change the paradigm of national industry. In this study, BIPV system which shows explosive growth among solar power generation system among new regeneration energies was selected as a main study subject. BIPV(Building Integrated Photovoltaic) system replaces exterior finishing material of roof and walls with PV modules to satisfy the functions of electricity production and exterior finishing materials. It does not need a separate installation place unlike other conventional solar generation system and it can save cost because it replaces conventional exterior finishing materials. As it is being developed in the form of curtain wall, roof window, shade or PV roof tile, it can be used as a building exterior design element. It is suitable for Korea, where land is absolutely short of and high density city center development is being made.
However, to apply BIPV system to the exterior of the building, the design and the structural characteristics of BIPV modules should be identified unlike general PV systems, and shape analysis of land and building, harmony with adjacent buildings, shade of neighboring buildings, installation angle, and water‐tightness, air‐tightness and insulation as a construction material should be additionally considered. Accordingly, in this article, ‘Seoul City Hall’ under construction was selected as a standard model and major consideration elements in BIPV system design such as insolation, shade, azimuth and tilt angle were reviewed. Based on the review results, neighboring land was analyzed and damage by shade was analyzed through shading simulation by season (winter solstice, the spring equinox, the autumnal equinox and summer solstice) and by time. Additionally, using PVSYST, a solar generation simulation tool, annual generation amount and comprehensive efficiency were estimated by entering detailed data according to amount of insolation, solar installation angle, direction, module, inverter specifications and array configuration. The change in the amount of power generated was observed by adjusting the azimuth (right west~ right south ~ fight east, 15° interval) and tilt angle (0~90°, 15° interval). Based on the results, the installation method to maximize the efficiency of energy performance in BIPV system was proposed.
