The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of discrimination factor and violence factor on the life satisfaction of disabled women, which has recently been regarded as a serious issue, besides factors already identified to be affecting the life satisfaction of disabled women and to propose ways to improve disabled women’s life satisfaction based on these factors. The source of data used for the analysis was 2008 Survey on the Disabled produced by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA)--763 disabled women aged between 18 and 48 who answered questions regarding marital life and disabled women among the total of 7,000 disabled people. The methods used for the analysis include frequency analysis, T-Test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis. The major analysis results are as follows: First, the average life satisfaction score of disabled women was 20.22, which was about 6 points higher than that of the disabled (14.4). Second, T-test and analysis of variance conducted to see if there are any differences in life satisfaction among groups within independent variables demonstrated that there are differences in life satisfaction depending on the type of disability and whether or not they experienced discrimination, domestic violence, and sexual violence. Third, the correlation between major independent variables and life satisfaction are as follows: in terms of the type of disability, physical disability has positive correlation with life satisfaction; among the discrimination factors, discrimination experience and perceived discrimination due to disability have negative correlation with life satisfaction, and; among the violence factors, domestic violence experience and sexual violence experience have negative correlation with life satisfaction. Fourth, as a result of multiple linear regression analysis with disability factor, discrimination factor, and violence factor as independent variables and sociodemographic factor as a controlled variable in order to verify the factors affecting life satisfaction of disabled women, it was found that disabled women who have higher scores of Activity of Daily Living(ADL), lower scores of perceived discrimination due to disability, less domestic violence experiences, less the sexual violence experiences, higher level of education, higher monthly average income, jobs, spouses, and no children are more satisfied with their lives than those who do not. In light of this survey’s findings, it was proposed in this paper that discrimination should be prevented through rigorous enforcement of Disability Discrimination Act, that it should be made sure that the discrimination victims do not suffer additional emotional damage from discrimination through strict law enforcement on offenders, that more efforts should be put into preventing domestic violence and sexual violence against disabled women, that strong measures to protect the human rights of disabled women should be put in place, and that welfare services to facilitate the self support and social participation of disabled women by ensuring that they have no difficulties in their daily living activities should be expanded. This study is different from preceding studies in that it utilized survey on the disabled conducted on a national level in order to identify factors affecting life satisfaction of disabled women. However, it also has its limitations: due to the insufficient analysis of secondary data, this study does not cover a wide range of variables related to the life satisfaction of disabled women, and there is a possibility that mentally disabled women might have depended on their guardians to answer the questionnaires.
