It has been a long problem that young generation has political indifference. However, along with the recent spread of smart phones and new media like SNS or pod cast playing roles as new fields of discussion, nowadays the media are producing public opinions in our society. Especially, young generation’s active participation is increasing. Thereupon, this article examined the effects of media use on political attitudes and participation with the subjects of local undergraduates. This study divided media into conventional media like TV or newspaper and also the internet, SNS, and pod cast, and political attitudes into political efficacy and political interest. Moreover, this paper divided political efficacy into intrinsic efficacy, the confidence in one’s own ability to participate in politics actively, and extrinsic efficacy, the expectation that the government will accept each individual’s demand. In addition, this research also classified the behavior to visit a certain party’s or candidate’s homepage to write a comment or call to give one’s opinion or the behavior to write a comment to a social or political article posted on the internet or write a comment to a social or political issue in an internet community into active participation and also participation in signature-seeking campaigns, political participation in a party, participation in meetings or assemblies for social or political issues into active participation. And this study distinguished the voting at the 19th general election and also the voting intention for the 18th presidential election to come along. If advanced researches conducted analysis chiefly on the participation in voting, this study could draw various relations by conducting analysis through subdividing political participation based on the discussion on the concepts of political participation. According to the result of the analysis, local undergraduates use SNS the most among the kinds of media, but they hardly use media regarding either political or social issues. And if they use TV, newspaper, and pod cast more among the types of media, they tend to show greater political interest. This means that undergraduates’ political interest is greatly affected by the conventional media of TV, newspaper and also the new media of pod cast. Regarding the media affecting their decision on the candidate and party at the 19th general election, TV and the internet ranked highest, and the next ones were people around them, newspaper, SNS, and pod cast in order. What was interesting was that Korea’s local undergraduates are especially affected by people around them more than others. Also, it has been found that as their extrinsic efficacy is higher, they show both greater active and passive political participation. What was noticeable was that unlike the results of advanced researches, the students with high intrinsic efficacy and high political interest showed rather low participation in the voting of the 19th general election. Regarding this, there could be various reasons such as political indifference, disbelief in politicians, generation characteristics, and regionality, and deeper discussion will be needed for this afterwards.
