In the case of the Imha Dam in the Nakdong River basin, before 2001, the number of days of turbidity (based on effluence) of over 30NTU ranged from 1~3 months with a maximum turbidity of 248NTU. Nonetheless, the typhoon Rusa in 2002 and the typhoon Maemi in 2003 caused a high degree turbidity of 30NTU for more than 10 months where the maximum turbidity was recorded as 1221NTU. In particular, the typhoon Maemi in 2003 resulted in 315 days of turbidity. Precipitation in Korea is concentrated in the summer season, and so the possibility of turbidity in the flood season cannot be ignored. Therefore, Dam basins should prepare for such flood season turbulence. This study examined the preparations of reservoirs and analyzed the degree of turbidity reduction in reservoirs and downstream in the case of channel reduction facility installations using a basin model. The BASINS/HSPF model was applied to the basin model and the CE-QUAL-W2 model was utilized as a 2D model. A combination of the two models was used to analyze the turbid effect in reservoirs and downstream based on sediment inflow control. For the combination of models, sediment inflow quantity in basins was computed from a model simulation and these values were then used as input to the 2D model to analyze turbidity in reservoirs. Downstream turbidity analysis employed Dam effluence turbidity as input data, which was computed in the reservoir simulation. Because turbid water shows significant hourly variations, the time interval for the simulation employed an hour-interval. Furthermore, to analyze the turbidity control of a turbid reduction facility, an HSPF Web-based tool was used to install sediment inflow control facilities in all streams and their effects were analyzed. The results were linked to the efficiency of existing turbid reduction measures of the Imha Dam so that MCDM could examine an optimum alternative. Based on the results, an analysis was made of sediment inflow-controlled turbidity reduction of reservoirs and downstream. To analyze the turbidity effects of precipitation, 100-year and 200-year rainfalls were applied to basins and turbid water effects in reservoirs and downstream and analyzed using the combination model. An optimum location based on the MCDM was Gwangduk Bridge where turbidity reduction in reservoirs and downstream was approximately 20%. At this point, the effluence turbidity is expected to be low because a selected intake facility is installed at the Imha Dam but in the case of a high degree of turbid water effluence like in 2006 due to a typhoon, there would be a high degree of turbid water over 30NTU downstream even without any sediment inflow from other streams other than from Imha basin. If sediment inflows from other streams are considered, there would be more turbid water effects downstream. Hence, taking appropriate preparations is necessary. This study analyzed the reduction of channel facility installations which is a part of turbid reduction measures in reservoirs. This is only one of many measures, including a detour watercourse, a selected intake facility, a check Dam, and a debris barrier that controls the inflow from streams. The channel reduction measure showed a control effect of 20% which can be improved based on analyses and applications that use a variety of measures. Also, this study did not incorporate actual surveys or data and only utilized GIS technology. Therefore, there may be discrepancies with actual values. In conclusion, for further turbid reduction effect analysis of reservoirs in Imha basin, accurate field survey, long-term accurate flow and sediment observational data as well as comparative analyses of various measures are necessary. In addition, such studies should be continuously conducted to improve the water turbidity problems of Imha basin.
