The use and production of PCBs have been prohibited since 1970s as it was identified as a hazardous material, and it was also listed as a strongly toxic and non-biodegradable POP (persistent organic pollutant) at 2001 Stockholm Convention on POPs. Currently, Korea aims to eradicate all remains of PCBs via green processing by year 2015. This study is to develop efficient methods to process PCBs using cost effective materials. First method investigated is dechlorination of PCBs using Fe2O3, which is a side product of hot forging process. Parameters for dechlorination by Fe2O3 are determined to test the feasibility of Fe2O3 dechlorinate on PCBs. Secondly examined method is absorption of PCBs through use of clay. Absorption efficiency of clay, a relatively common material, is compared to that of activated carbon for its possible role as a substitute. The results are summarized as following: First, PCB waste used for the experiment comprises mainly of Aroclor 1242 and has PCB density of 33 ppm. Second, optimum condition parameters for efficient pyrolyse catalyst are 10 wt.% Fe2O3,reaction temperature 300°C, and reaction time three hours. Dechlorinate efficiency of Aroclor 1242 at optimum condition was 80%. Third, for three hour period, absorption efficiency of Aroclor 1242 with 10 wt.% clay was 56% while that of activated carbon was 80%. The efficiency of clay is about 25% lower than that of activate carbon, but economic plus makes clay a possible candidate for absorbent. Last, three hour absorption via 10 wt.% clay followed by three hour pyrolyse using added 10 wt.% Fe2O3 gives 95% PCBs elimination efficiency satisfying the waste regulation of below 2 ppm of PCBs.
