This study is focusing on how Scriabin presented his philosophy as musical expression by analyzing one of his piano works, Piano Sonata Op.53 No.5, as well as studying his lifetime and periodic piano works. His early works were influenced by late romanticism, however he tried to move forwards in order to develop his own musical expression. During his middle period, his interest in theosophy influenced both his music and musical thought, and led him to create the ‘Mystic Chord’. Piano Sonata Op.53 No.5 is one of the best examples to show his innovative attempts towards a progressively modern sound. His way of using various scales and modes along with the mystic chord created polytonality, and he brought out complex rhythm by combining various different kinds of rhythm. The complex inner voices build up the feeling of polyphony. Furthermore, he tried to break out of the tonal system by using a tonal-center, while still maintaining tonality at the same time. In terms of structure, he wrote the piece as one single movement, differentiating from the traditional sonata form which consists of four movements. In his late period, he put his ideas of philosophy and mystic chord into his works and associated color with music, leading to the development of a synthetic art.
