As part of the effort to drastically reduce a CO2 emission since the 2005 Kyoto protocol, cement-zero concrete has also been received much attention in the Cement Industry. Cement zero concrete can develop the compressive strength without ordinary portland cement through the formation of Si-O-Al-O structure obtained by the polymerization of fly ash rich in Si and Al contents and in highly alkaline state. Accordingly, this study examines the characteristics of cement-zero concrete using fly ash as a binder. To this goal, various tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of alkali-activators, curing methods, high fineness fly ash crushed physically, and curing temperature. The reaction mechanism is then identified through the analysis of the micro-structure. Moreover, the mechanical properties of cement-zero concrete is evaluated. Finally, solutions for cement-zero concrete as an environment-friendly construction material are proposed with the economic efficiency by the considerable reduction of CO2 emission for the cement production. Following conclusions can be drawn from this study. (1) The use of 1:1 mix of NaOH and sodium silicate (SiO2/Al2O3=4.13, Na2O/ SiO2=0.14, Na2O/Al2O3=0.56) as alkali-activator is resulted in the best constructability, the most activated polymerization of the Si and Al components of fly ash, and the best development of strength. (2) It was found that the execution of curing at temperature of 60 ℃ during 48 hours and air dry curing contributed to the activation of the polymerization through the exudation of internal moisture of concrete, and therefore, was effective for the improvement of strength. (3) High fineness fly ash of which the glassy membrane has been physically broken activated the polymerization owing to the ease of the elution of the Si and Al components in fly ash in alkaline state. Such property improved significantly the early strength of concrete but this strength improvement effect appeared to reduce gradually in a long term. (4) The mixed use of fly ash and blast furnace slag powder appeared to secure remarkable constructability and develop compressive strength larger than 70 MPa when adopting a 50:50 mix in order to take full advantage of the outstanding fluidity of fly ash and reactivity of blast furnace slag powder. Moreover, the addition of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) was seen to improve the compressive strength by inducing the polymerization together with the pozzolanic reaction. (5) Larger amounts of column-shaped reactants were generated by the polymerization at the surface of fly ash particles as well larger amounts of small granular reactants at the surface of these column-shaped reactants were generated with higher molarity of the alkali activators, longer duration of curing, and higher curing temperature. Furthermore, Si and Al of fly ash were mainly detected at the surface of non-reacted fly ash whereas Na, the main component of alkali-activators, was detected on the reactants. (6) Cement-zero concrete exhibits constructability, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength similar to those of ordinary concrete, which makes it a new environment-friendly concrete that could replace conventional concrete with OPC. Formulas relating the compressive strength, elastic modulus, and splitting tensile strength suitable to cement-zero concrete were proposed. In addition, further studies are needed to evaluate the mechanical properties of cement-zero concrete and then suggest solutions for their improvement so as to collect larger amount of data enabling to enhance the reliability of cement-zero concrete. (7) The emission of CO2 produced by the cement-zero concrete mix appeared to be practically constant regardless of the design strength. Accordingly, the proposed cement-zero concrete technology can generate significant added value in terms of economy and environment not only by potentially solving the problem of CO2 gas exhaustion of the concrete construction industry but also by exploiting efficiently a large portion of industrial by-products as construction material.
