The Bukhan fortress is the northern fortress when Baekie dynasty decided the capital in Hanam Wirye palace. It was the place where The king Gaeru of Beakje established first in 132, and also King Hyenjong moved the forgery of Teajo in Goryo in early of 11th century invasion of the Kitan. This fortress had fierce battle against the Mongolian armies in 19th year of the king Gojong of Goryo dynasty and it was reconstructed by the king Woo in 1387. However, the exact location of the Bukhan fortress is unknown to Goryeo era. The present Bukhan fortress was built in 1711 the king Sookjong by order of the king for castle town defence measures after the Japanese invasions of Korea and the Manchu war of 1636 during Chosun dynasty era. This study investigated the characteristics of construction methods of the only fortress which is connected between the rock face section and main body of the mountain castle during the king Sookjong era, and searched the characteristics of construction methods of Bukhan fortress through the comparing and analyzing of other surrounding fortresses. There are no previous studies, excavation investigates and insufficient construction of drawing, so that the field survey was conducted to search the characteristics by the measurement of the each ramparts. To begin with, the field survey was conducted under the building records which are described in Bibyunsadeungrok and Bukhanji about the overall history and maintenance status. Inquiry was basis on stone types, processing methods, and building methods. Inquiry section was between the one castle gate to another of it in three districts where the fortress built. The characteristics of Yeojang was looked into and analyzed the only identifiable Yeojang forms in unrestored section - the restored Yeojang section was excepted-. The overall heights of the ramparts were measured to check whether the current length of Gochuk, Banchuk, Banbanchuk, and Jichuc yeojang are similar to recorded literature. After the measurements, result analysis shows vacancy of the Gochuk, and Banchuk about 0.5 to 1m comparing to the records. There is a limitation to compare the current statues and the records, because it was difficult to categorize the mid-point of heights in the Gochuk, and Banchuk, and unexposured foundation stone makes difficult to recognize the exact heights of several sections. As a result of the investigation of the ramparts, main body of the mountain castle was composed of the granites and fieldstone from Mountain Bukhan, and the has slight changes in form and size of the stones by following slope. The stones shows elaborate works and toemulrim in Gochuk, the high wall. However, the Banchuk, and Banbanchuk, which are lower parts of the wall, show less elaborate works than Gochuk, and non or weak toemulrim features. The ramparts, connected to the rock face sections, built with worked rock of castle at lower part of the rock face and it used layer connections at the steep slopes on the rock faces. Outcomes of Yeojang inquiry, all of the Yeojang were built by appropriate use of fieldstone and a broken stone, and used plaster in spaces among the stones. There are three different uses of Yeojang at fortress gates, slope sections, and flatland sections. In addition, some sections employed the miseoks, and some other did not employ the miseoks. The conclusion comes from the comparing to the other surrounding fortresses through the basis of the investigation. Unlike the other fortresses, building the fortress in short period of time -6 months- was possible by not only the treaty with Chung dynasty, and many of the fortification technicians but also easy access of the stones in Mountain Bukhan -quarrying traces shown-. The ramparts were concentrated on the heights and characteristics in accordance with tomography. Under the section investigation result, like the Banchuk, and Banbanchuk, it is considered to follow the comtemporary standardized construction techniques. That is supported by the bulk of identical long-and-short work and the method of work and forms similarities in the records. Some of sections show the use of the miseoks, but some other parts does not show those of miseoks. miseoks is not systematically important member, therefore, the responsible engineers might decide to use or not to. In Yeojang section, it was concentrated to search the well conservated of the characteristics of it. Consequently, there is an unique stlye of the Yeojang at the Bukhan fortress gate which used the huge granite and the form is different from other surrounding fortresses. The size and the forms of Yeojang were not consistant the other words, it shows different forms in different topogragh. Although Namhan fortress takes different material, it shows similar nature of Yeojang, and rest of the fortresses give difficulties of identify the prior forms of Yeojang. Moreover, when the surrounding strongholds repaired, those show the transformation to Jeondol during the king Yeongjo and Jungjo era. Bukhan fortress also has repair records, nevertheless, it was tough to look for the Jeondol traces. Bukhan fortress easily obtained the stone. That is, Bukhan fortress could repair with stone, but other fortresses faced difficulties to seek the stone. Meanwhile, Bukhan fortress is used as climbing courses and even damaged in some parts. It could not receive the attention in academia, nevertheless Bukhan fortress has cultural and historical significant values. Also, the repaired ramparts was conducted the repair and restoration construction under states of shortages of investigations about the excavation and present conditions. This study desires to help the restoration construction and the researchers who investigate it in the future. To introduce the Bukhan fortress is to realize the historical importances to visitors, moreover, many of the investigations are conducted by the solid restoration construction and excavation.
