The purposes of this study is to reveal the effect of educational program using Thinking Maps (TM) on the development of children’s creativity and intellectual abilities. This study introduces TM and its theoretical background. TM is widely applied to educational programs through k-12 and college in the U.S. but it is relatively new to Korea. Hence the previous studies have more focused on TM practices in the U.S. than in Korea. For the purposes of this study, the researcher set two research questions. Research Question #1: What are the effects of TM activities on children’s creativity? Research Question #2: What is the effects of TM activities on children’s intellectual abilities? In order to reveal the effect of TM, children’s creativity and intellectual abilities were assessed. Two kindergartens located in Seoul were chosen for this study. Sixty 4-year-old children (30 children of each kindergarten) participated in the study. Thirty children from a kindergarten were selected as experiment group and the others in another kindergarten were chosen as compare group. The experiment kindergarten had adapted an educational program using TM for few years and the 4-year-old children newly participated in the program and remained in the program for a year whilst the compare group kindergarten ran an educational program based on the national level kindergarten curriculum. “3 Q general diagnostic test” was administered twice before and after the experiment. The test consists of 3 domains, 20 sub-categories; intellectual, emotional and fitness, and personality domains. Before the experiment, the pretest results of two groups did not show significant difference. In order to compare two group’s pre- and post-test results, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed using SPSS version 18. The summary of the results of this study is below. First, TM activities were effective on the development of children’s creativity (F=5.482, p<.5). Second, TM activities were effective on the development of children’s intellectual abilities (F=7.348, p<.1). Hence, TM activities are effective on both developments of children’s creativity and intellectual abilities.
