The objective of this study is to develop a reality therapy self-counseling program that makes it possible to solve problems, caused by various conflicts in life, on one’s own by the application of the counseling process. In line with this objective, the preliminary program was pretested in schoolchildren.
Prior to this study, a comprehensive analysis was made of previous studies and a definition was given of self-counseling. Then, the reality therapy was applied to self-counseling and the self-counseling process was routinized. Grounded on that, an internalization program was developed by the use of visual aids in order that schoolchildren might take self-counseling with ease in their real life.
To pretest the program, the stress-coping skill test, the problem-solving skill test and the self-efficacy test were conducted on 320 schoolchildren in fifth or sixth grade at S-Elementary School, 30 of whom who made low marks on all three tests were subject to this study with the approval of their parents. They were assigned randomly to an experimental group and a control group by 15s. The program was hosted by the author during 13 sessions in all.
The program was divided into 4 stages; the first stage was to help subjects learn the fundamental theory, the second was to familiarize them with visual aids for self-counseling, the third was to help them apply it to the life scene by having any help from their teachers, and the fourth was to confirm the results without help from their teachers. The first stage was made up of five 60-minute sessions with a large group; the second up of two 60-minute sessions with a large group; the third up of three 50-minute sessions with 3-person subgroups. The fourth stage was made up of two 40-minute sessions with individual activities, and one final session was for windup. The subjects underwent the stress-coping skill test, the problem-solving skill test and the self-efficacy test before the instigation of the program, and underwent the post test after it. In addition, an additional test was conducted 2 months later in order to observe their changes. Statistical data were analyzed by use of the program ‘Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS; for Windows; version 18.0)’ and the simple main effects were verified through the independent t-test and the paired t-test in addition to the repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The results of this study are as in the following:
First, the program was found to be effective to improve the stress-coping skill. In the preliminary test, the experimental group and the control group showed homogeneity. After the instigation of the program, however, the stress-coping skill became better in the experimental group. The result was the same even in the additional test conducted 2 months later. As regards 4 sub-factors, similarly, the experimental group showed more significant changes.
Second, the program was effective to improve the problem-solving skill. In the preliminary test, there was no significant inter-group difference in problem-solving skill. But after the instigation of the program, the problem-solving skill was remarkably improved in the experimental group. On the other hand, the control group showed a slight change. The additional test showed that the experimental group maintained the skill. The two showed similar results even in sub-factors.
Third, the program was effective to heighten self-efficacy. The control group did not show significant changes after the instigation of the program, whereas the experimental group showed a remarkably higher self-efficacy. The result was the same even in the additional test.
In this study the visual aids-based reality therapy self-counseling program, applied to schoolchildren, was found to be effective to improve stress-coping skill, problem-solving skill and self-efficacy to a significant extent, which implies that this program may help them have sound minds and adjust to their school by taking self-counseling as regards their own problems and resolving many conflicts in a positive and constructive way.
