This case study analyzes aggressiveness transformation processes shown in a counseling. This is theoretically based on Winnicott's idea that the aggressiveness is an activity of life instinct and the environment in early stage of development is highly important. He believed that infants' born propensity is greatly influenced by how the environment responds to their innate aggressiveness: it could develop in healthy condition or could end up in development distortion. Facilitating environment or good enough fosterers? care includes: holding, playing, omnipotent fantasy satisfying, object providing, and surviving. Altogether, they help forming true selves of infants. In Winnicott belief, infants are able to achieve solid background for developing healthy true selves with these aids. On the other hand, he insisted that when the care in foster environment fails, the infants will hide their natural characteristics and live submissively to the environment as false selves. This study analyzes a client who had formed false self because of distorted aggressiveness development. The client retreated from relationship after suffering from ostracism and mob violence; he showed passive aggressiveness such as resentment and victim-hood. Furthermore, the study will suggest how the client?s aggressiveness has transformed in his inner world and in relationship with others with the help of counselor?s facilitating environment provision and relationship experience. Research inquiries were set up for the purpose of acquiring the insight in curing the client who was exposed in emotional ostracism or violence due to distorted aggressiveness development problems. 1. What kinds of intervention has counselor made to transform the client?s aggressiveness? 2. How did the client?s aggressiveness transform? This study used 100 sessions of verbatim during 2 years of counseling that are reliable enough to describe the aggressiveness transformation process. Followings are aggressiveness transformation processes shown in these verbatim sessions: 1. Object absence into object awareness 2. Overwhelming object experience into attachment formation 3. Psychological trauma contact and mourning process 4. Passive reality adaptation into active adaptation 5. Acceptance of integrated viewpoint: Restoring the true self. Followings are primary results of the study. First, in early stage of counseling, the client had reproduced relationship with fosterers by repeated withdrawals and severances. The counselor had also reenacted incursive role as she was involved in the client?s projective identification. When the counselor recognized her mistake through counter-transference and squiggle game, however, she accepted the client's desire - not to be impinged - and helped him express his repressed feelings. Second, the client had formed attachment by trusting the relationship with others and invited the counselor into symbiotic relationship. It happened when the client were provided with facilitating environment which reflects his initiative. This relationship experience with the counselor resulted in client?s expanded interest in friendly peer group. Third, the client?s agony and humiliation were stimulated by facing his psychological trauma in the counselor?s emotional holding environment. Here and now, however, the counselor had helped the client to be aware of his inner strength by surviving mourning-process together. As a result, the client finally located his own value and gained interests in various fields reviving from emotionally paralyzed and suppressed form of life. Fourth, mirror object providing, which became client?s inner source, triggered the client?s image transformation as his initiative in relationship had improved. The counselor became the target for aggressiveness when the client was able to maintain emotional bond with the counselor and acquire free command of primitive and destructive aggressiveness. By forcing his oppressed aggressiveness upon the counselor ? who is real object ? the client?s capacity for considering the wounded counselor is being produced. Fifth, the client is in the integral course of accepting ambivalent situation for self and object. He can take care of himself by internalized relationship experience which had been established throughout fusion-symbiosis-separation-individuation process in relationship with the counselor. Furthermore, he gained objective insight toward real object. These results made it possible to get insight into the significant of facilitating environment. It is important to provide environment which does not impinge formless characteristics in early stages of life. However, human beings inherently need mirroring; when provided with consistent holding, surviving and facilitating environment, they can restore their spontaneities and transform their distorted aggressiveness into constructive one. As for the counselors, they should be able to provide good enough cares ? emotional, environmental support ? to clients in order to cure their psychological trauma. To accomplish this goal, counselors themselves should maintain warm, solid and healthy mental status. key-words; Winnicott theory, facilitating environment, holding, mirroring, object providing, omnipotent fantasy satisfying, playing, surviving, true self, false self, aggressiveness transformation process
