Abstract
The Effect of Performance Routine on Anxiety, Psychological Skills and Diving Performance
The research aimed to investigate the effect of routine on anxiety, psychological skills and diving performance by applying routines to diving athletes who does not establish their routines. The established research hypothesis were as follows. There is a difference between an experimental group and a control group in diving performance, sports competition anxiety, competition setting anxiety, athlete psychological skills, and sports performance strategies, resulting from application of performance routines. Twenty diving athletes, who are 12 years old on average with one year's diving experience, were selected from the diving athletes enrolled at Korea Swimming Federation. The selected athletes were divided into 2 groups; 10 athletes in an experimental group and a control group, respectively. The measuring tools used in the research were diving performance measurement, sports competition anxiety test(SCAT), competitive state anxiety inventory 2(CSAI-2), test of athlete psychological skill, and test of performance strategies (TOPS). The conclusions were drawn as follows from results of the diving performance measurement and the tests conducted by the 2×2 analysis of variance and the post-hoc test conducted by a paired t-test.
First, the experimental group was improved in diving performance after application of performance routines. The performance routine training helped bring them higher concentration and consistent diving performance, which positively affects them to improve their diving performance.
Second, anxiety decreased in the experimental group after performance routine was applied, whereas anxiety increased in the control group. The decreased anxiety shown in experimental group seems due to performance routines, including self-talk and imagery training.
Third, the experimental group showed decreased cognitive anxiety and physical anxiety out of competitive state anxiety factors and increased confidence, whereas the control group showed increased cognitive anxiety and physical anxiety and decreased confidence. That is, performance routine appears to aid to decrease anxiety.
Fourth, the experimental group showed increased following factors: athlete psychological skills' qualitative/mental training, the conquest will, confidence, optimal arousal, and optimal attention) after performance routines were applied to the group. This is considered that the application is directly related to qualitative/mental training, which positively affected the conquest will, arousal level and enhanced concentration.
Fifth, self-talk, imagery training and goal setting increased out of sports performance strategies after performance routines were applied to the experimental group. That is, diving scores were improved through two-fold training; 1) imagery training where concrete behaviors, feelings and thoughts were consecutively constituted, which should be done while performance routine training, and 2) goal setting training.
Taken together, the result of this study represents that performance routine decreases anxiety, improves psychological skills and eventually positively influences on diving performance. In future study, it will be valuable to examine the effect of routine in elite athletes and in different types of sports.
