The aim of this thesis is to investigate Double Consciousness in the course of looking for the identity of Henry-Park in Native Speaker and Franklin Hata in A Gesture Life.
The word Double-Consciousness is originally used by W. E. B Du Bois who is an African-American, the self-consciousness of African American is always formed by the expectation and the symbol of majorities for African American. This word has established itself as the most important concept in the contemporary literature as well as in African American criticism hereafter. Double-Consciousness by Du Bois is a special feeling splitted into two consciousnesses and spirits that African American can't reconcilable. As Henry Louis Gates said, the definition race can mean cultural difference as well as biological difference, so Double-Consciousness by Du Bois points conflicts and contradictions between races and can be interpreted further as conflicts and contradiction between two different cultures.
The time of diaspora inter-national and inter-ethnic moving are animated, under the systems, policies and the thoughts of individuals based on the multiculturalism that immigrants should assimilate to the host country, immigrants cannot help having pains of double-consciousness that split of consciousness and consciousness of others excessively.
Chang-Rae Lee is a 1.5 generation immigrant, in his biographical novel Native Speaker, he utters out the inner oppressions (double-consciousness) that Henry, his father and mother, Ahjumma have, which is delicate and deep insights in it. Henry is affected by his parents' passive and unsociable way of immigrant life. Although he can have a nice job, but he decides to be a spy. Henry the spy enjoys stealing a glance of others, as he has little self-confidence, so he doesn't take action forward.
Henry undertakes an assignment of John Kwang who is a candidate to be Mayor of New York City. Henry is affected by him. He can see Kwang in the near distance and they talk with each other. Kwang attracts Henry in many ways. He is different from the Korean-American people he has ever known. Korean-American people usually are silent, passive, inactive and marginal. But Kwang wants to embrace all the Asian-American people who don't have power or lost their voices. He wants to do a great politics. But a series of accidents he is involved in happens and Kwang is ruined. After Kwang's disappearance, Henry restarts his life as a helper of his wife who is a speech therapist. Finally they restore their relationship as a husband and a wife.
At first, Henry thinks it to be easy to get married to a white woman and to get a spy job to assimilate in the American community. But it isn't easy to be assimilated in American culture. He is lost somewhere between Korean culture and American culture. Finally he realizes that instead of being conscious of others excessively, taking pride in Korean culture and Koreanness is important as well. He respects Kwang in the way of keeping and having a pride in Korean culture. Kwang doesn't disregard Korean culture and spirit.
And he reflects that his father is really a hero because he sacrificed and contributed his life for the family and it is really an American dream.
In his second novel, 『A Gesture Life』,Chang-Rae Lee explores Hata's way of finding out his identity. Hata is an Asian-American living in a small city of Bedley Run in the suburb of New York. He is quiet and honest and live with manners and gestures. The writer tells the story about him in the form of memories who has a past trauma. The writer conveys in a fine and beautiful writing style and explores the real family, living with good neighbors, and really a nice ending in life. The two stories mention about difficulties of minority immigrants experiencing in a major white society. Henry, in the end, finds his identity both through keeping Korean culture and assimilate to the country. After Hata's wandering that he can't find his roots, he realizes the family to be a solution.
Among the difficulties of minority immigrants' racial discrimination, language barrier and cultural differences are the most painful. To be free of these oppressions and isolation, immigrants have to keep their original culture with pride and open minds. They have to overcome double-consciousness and stay away from the margin and then establish an independence. It may be positive to have a life-consciousness that Toni Morrison wanted to utter through her works and in the end to have cosmopolitanism in mind.
