This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Oenanthe javanica and Allium tuberosum complex on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high fat・high cholesterol diet. In the present study, the Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into a normal group (N group), a high fat supplemented group (HF group) and a high fat with 5% Oenanthe javanica and 5% Allium tubersum complex supplemented group (DAP group).
In the DAP group, the body weight was decreased more than in the HF group. Food intake and the food-efficiency ratio (FER) were decreased as well, but not significantly. In the organ weights, the abdominal weight decreased but epididymal weight was not shown. In the investigation of the lipid content levels in serum, the triglyceride and the cholesterol levels were decreased as well as the N group. And the HDL-cholesterol level was increased by 6%, and the LDL-cholesterol level was decreased by 30% compared to the HF group. The serum atherogenic index (AI), calculated in these results, was decreased more than the HF group, significantly.
In the investigation of triglyceride and total-cholesterol levels in the liver, the DAP group was decreased by 10% and 2.5%, respectively, compared to the HF group. And in the fecal samples, the levels increased by 33% and 73%, respectively.
Taken together, the Oenanthe javanica and Allium tuberosum complex have effects on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high fat diet via decreasing of body and organ weights, and changing of lipid contents in serum, liver and fecal.
