In this study, the technical feasibility of the mineral carbonation of flue gas desulfurization(FGD) gypsum to sequester CO2 was assessed systematically by considering various reaction parameters. Unlike other natural and industrial materials, FGD gypsum showed very high carbonation reactivity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. At the optimum conditions, calcium carbonate with a purity exceeding 90% could be obtained within 10 min at a carbonation conversion rate of approximately 95%. Therefore, the mineral carbonation of FGD gypsum in this study was considered technically feasible. More over, ammonium sulfate(99.2%) and calcium carbonate(above 90%) which are high- purity by-products from the gypsum carbonation reaction could also be put on the market. The ammonia content(90–120%), CO2 flow rate(1–4 L/min), solid-to-solution ratio(s/s)(15–50%), reaction temperature(20–80℃) and pressure(0–0.2 MPa) were varied to investigate their effects on the various aspects of the carbonation reaction; the effect of CO2/N2 gas mixture(15% CO2 and 85% N2) was also examined for using flue gas of a coal-fired power plant directly. The use of excess ammonia(110–120%) was found to be desirable for enhancing the stability of the reaction and for obtaining high purity CaCO3. An increase in the CO2 flow rate accelerated the carbonation reaction significantly but decreased the CO2 sequestration efficiency. Therefore, the flow rate should be optimized by considering both the reaction rate and CO2 sequestration efficiency. The most suitable CO2 flow rate-to-gypsum ratio was 0.0096 L/min·ggypsum in this study. An increase in the s/s ratio increased the extent of temperature rise in the slurry but it did not affect the carbonation conversion rate, which remained as high as 96% for s/s ratios up to 50%. An increase in the reaction temperature also accelerated the carbonation reaction but decreased the carbonation conversion rate. The decreased carbonation conversion rate by temperature was declined in the pressure(0.2 MPa) condition. The polymorphs of the calcium carbonate were varied according to the reaction temperature. Calcite and vaterite crystals were observed in the samples reacted at 20 and 40℃. Meanwhile, the sample produced at 60℃ was composed of mostly calcite with small amount of vaterite and/or aragonite. At 80℃, calcite and aragonite crystals were dominent. The use of a CO2/N2 gas mixture reduced the carbonation reaction rate, But it did not affect the CaCO3 purity or carbonation conversion rate. Nevertheless, since the carbonation reaction with CO2/N2 gas mixture could be accelerated about twice by rising the reaction temperature to 40℃, it is obvious that the flue gas can be used directly in the gypsum carbonation process. Gypsum carbonation plant at a capacity of 1000 t/year (bench-scale plant) was constructed in KIGAM and operated to find problems with scale-up and to assess the technical feasibility of the gypsum carbonation process. The results from the bench-plant experiment concerning the pH of slurry, internal pressure of reactor, accumulated flow rate, purity of calcium carbonate and carbonation conversion rate were very similar to the results of the lab-scale carbonation experiment. Consequently, any major problems were not noticed from the scale-up process. Based on the operation results of bench plant, the economic feasibility of gypsum carbonation process at a capacity of 300,000 t/year was assessed from the cost estimates. The raw material cost was 86.4% of the disposal cost of gypsum and CO2. Because more than 90% of the raw material cost was ammonia price, it should be crucial on the determination of the economic feasibility of gypsum carbonation process. The disposal cost of gypsum was 188,000 won/ton. If the calcite and ammonium sulfate were sold as products, the net profit was estimated to be 5500 million won. From the above results, it can be concluded that FGD gypsum is a desirable raw material for mineral carbonation to eliminate CO2 in flue gas. In addition, the mineral carbonation of FGD gypsum process could be feasible both technically and economically.
