The rapid increase of energy consumption and oil prices throughout the world has necessitated the development of new and renewable energy technologies. It is estimated that only heating and cooling take about one third of the total energy consumption worldwide. However, the conventional heating and cooling systems have low efficiencies. Also, boilers and electric heaters that are mostly used to generate both domestic and industrial hot water are inefficient and high energy consumers. For this reason, heat pumps which are known to be very energy efficient and have less environmental impact are being promoted to replace these heating, cooling and hot water systems. Among heat pumps, systems that operate on single stage cycles are found to be very inefficient at low evaporating temperatures and high condensing temperature and pressure. The objectives of this study were to analyse the current status of the performance of GSHPs used in the Republic of Korea, and their certification standards in comparison to European standards. The performance of some air-to-water heat pumps available in the world market has also been analysed and compared with the GSHPs in Korea. This study also reviews the various types of two-stage heat pumps that are already in use. Finally, a newly designed cascade heat pump for high temperature hot water generation has been studied and presented. 90% of the 86 certified GSHP units in the Republic of Korea up to the year 2010 was water-to-water GSHP units. It was found that most of these heat pump units had their cooling COPs superior to their heating COPs. Also, the average heating COP of the air-to-water heat pump units was higher than that of the water-to-water GSHP units. Most of the GSHPs also had higher underground circulation water flow rates than the recommended flow rate of 11.4 LPM/3.5 kW because the current certification standard does not provide conditions for the underground circulation water flow rate. Therefore, it is suggested that the certification standard concerning underground circulation flow rate should be revised. on the other hand, the rating conditions of the air-to-water heat pumps correspond with NF EN 14511-1~4, which implies an appropriate volumetric flow rate of the secondary fluid could be determined. Unlike the GSHPs in Korea, the air-to-water heat pumps are rated for both floor heating and space heating using fan coil or radiators. There is therefore the need to include floor heating in the certification standard of the GSHPs in Korea. R22 and the HFCs R410A, R407C and R134a which are being phased out were mostly use and so regulations and institutions should be established for the use of alternative refrigerants to replace these refrigerants. Most researches done on heat pumps have been on heat pumps for refrigeration, cooling and heating. There is therefore the need for more research on hot water heat pumps, especially for high temperature. Even though the cascade heat pump cycle has a great potential more efficient hot water generation even at low evaporating temperatures, it has been researched least for this purpose. It was also observed that the use of natural refrigerants is on the ascendancy. Finally, the newly designed cascade heat pump for hot water generation has been experimented on and analysed. The COPs of the newly designed cascade system for hot water generation were higher than those of the basic cascade system by 0.9, 8.9 and 18% for water temperature rise values of 4.91, 6.24 and 7.15°C respectively. Therefore, the performance of a cascade heat pump system is successfully enhanced using the HW HX.
