Inter subject Sychronisation(...

This is a study about aesthetic perception audiences experience on ballet movements. Two experiments were carried out for the study, one being a behavioral experiment that categorizes pictures and the other being an fMRI experiment. The fMRI experiment contains Slider Rating test taken right after the scanning. Ballet novices participated in these two experiments and 90-second long solo dances of Romantic ballet (Giselle), Classical ballet (Swan Lake) and Modern ballet (Agon) were shown as stimuli. Theses stimuli were controlled by using the same starting and ending moves, the same background, costume and music. In the Behavioral experiment, a total of 30 pictures, 10 for each genre, were given to the participants and they were asked to categorize the pictures into 3 groups. In order to learn how they feel about ballet movements of each group, they were asked to state adjectives, and then to name the most appropriate era of ballet. The result showed that novices had trouble identifying the genres just by looking at ballet movements but for adjectives, impressions such as ‘beautiful’, ‘elegant’, ‘complex’, ‘heavy’ and ‘modern’ showed statistically significant difference among genres. In the fMRI experiment carried out in the UK, 3 different stimuli were shown to the participants in counter-balanced order while their brains were scanned. When the brain parts of the participants were examined with Inter subject Sychronisation(ISS) analysis it was found out that:, First, all ballet genres were perceived as aesthetic stimuli; Second, Modern ballet that highlights the beauty of forms stimulated the left and right Inferior Occipital Gyrus(BA18,19) that are involved with visual processing; Third, Romantic ballet that puts emphasis in delivering emotion stimulated the Postcentral Gyrus, Precuneus and Inferior Parietal Lobe(IPL) that enables people to understand and empathize with other people’s emotions; Fourth, the movements of swan in Classical ballet stimulated the Lingual Gyrus and the Parahhipocampal Gyrus. This suggests that even though representation of the bird’s movement expressed with Port de Bras is somewhat abstract audiences can recognize it and therefore their understanding of the piece will increase.
