In order to maximize efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cell, it is necessary to reduce the cell’s surface reflection and recombination. Surface passivation lowers interface on surface and minimize surface recombination by field effect. Passivation on solar cell fabrication deposits either thermally grown SiO2 layer or SiNx:H layer by PECVD. There are various attributes that need to be concerned before choosing passivation layer: refractive index, deposition temperature, reflection and thermal stability. Porous silicon (PS) is applied on solar cell for its advantage on light trapping effect and simplicity in manufacturing via electrochemical etching. Furthermore, through porous silicon, selective doping effect is also achieved, because etching does not influence electrode region, which eventually enhances the efficiency of cell. In spite of its simple process that enables mass production, screen printing solar cell, one of the most commercialized solar cell, has a few restrictions from achieving high efficiency due to high contact resistance and use of impure metal. Its front electrode consists of impure metal, which limits the metal’s conductivity to 1/3 compared to that of pure metal. High efficiency solar cell has a high aspect and an outstanding conductivity because it deposits pure metal by evaporation, sputtering, etc. on its electrode instead of screen printing with paste. In spite of its high efficiency, its commercialization is highly difficult because the pure metals, Ti/Pd/Ag, it requires are very expensive. In order to replace these metals used on high efficiency solar cell, Ni and Cu are considered as the most suitable substitutes. Amongst various methods of forming Ni and Cu, plating is the most advantageous method because of its fast producing line and a low expense on equipment by not requiring vacuum atmosphere during deposition. If Cu contacts directly to a substrate, it penetrates and diffuses within the substrate and lowers efficiency of the cell. Hence, Ni is served as a seed layer that prevents Cu from diffusing. Ni silicide (NiSi: 14μΩ․㎝), which is generated by Ni through annealing process, has a similar resistivity compared to Ti silicide(13-16 μΩ․㎝). In this study, instead of using Ag paste to form front electrode as a conventional screen printing fabrication, Ni and Cu plating is conducted in order to increase aspect ratio on front electrode, and increase electron-hole pair collecting probability by enhancing conductivity. Overall area of front electrode is reduced by fine widths implementation. Furthermore, through applying surface texturing, anti-reflection coating, and porous silicon, optical loss minimizes to its most. The priority of the study is to investigate on inexpensive solar cell through enhancing conductivity by plating low-cost metal on front electrode and surface porous process.
