The human carbon footprint, the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities, is main reason of accelerated global warming. Effort of individuals in minimizing the carbon footprint is vital to save our planet. This article reports a study of the carbon footprint of Mineral Paper, paper made from mainly CaCO₃, using life cycle assessment(LCA) technique in two stages. In the first stage carbon footprint of Mineral Paper is assessed. The LCA was conducted following Korea Product Carbon Footprint(KPCF) standard. The product life cycle stage considered was to manufacturing stage(cradle to gate stage) without usage and disposal stage. Whenever possible and feasible Life cycle inventory(LCI) data were collected from manufacturer of Mineral Paper and remaining data were obtained by calculation and from the specialized databases such as Korea Life Cycle Inventory(KLCI) database and others. In the second stage result of carbon footprint of Mineral Paper was compared with wood pulp based printing paper and plastic film in a comparison standard of weight, thickness, sales unit, poster product, and shopping bag product. Carbon footprint data of compared materials were from KLCI database. The result show that carbon footprint of Mineral Paper was 0.81kgCO2eq/kg. Carbon footprint caused from electricity was 0.371kgCO2eq/kg account for 45.85% of its total carbon footprint. Carbon footprint on Mineral Paper's HDPE content was 0.347kgCO2eq/kg account for 42.87%. These two factors in total accounted for 88.72% of Mineral Paper's total carbon footprint. In comparison by weight, carbon footprint of Mineral Paper was the lowest followed by printing paper, PVC, PP and HDPE. In comparison by thickness, Mineral Paper and wood-free paper were the lowest followed by PP, Art paper, PVC and HDPE. In comparison by sales unit and poster producing, Mineral Paper was lower in carbon footprint than printing paper. In comparison by producing shopping bag, Mineral Paper, printing paper and HDPE shopping bag had shown similar carbon footprint but when water resistant converting for shopping bag was considered, printing paper shopping bag showed the highest carbon footprint, higher by 25% than Mineral Paper and HDPE shopping bag. In conclusion, carbon footprint of Mineral Paper is the lowest compare to that of printing paper and plastic film in standard of comparison by weight, thickness, sales unit, poster products, and shopping bag products. However, value of carbon footprint would differ depending on comparison unit used. To reduce carbon footprint of Mineral Paper, study shows potential in electricity usage and in raw material, HDPE. Reducing defect rate, 20%, in manufacturing stage can increase efficiency of electricity usage resulting carbon footprint decrease. Also, using renewable energy can be an option. Replacing Mineral Paper's HDPE to biodegradable plastic or lower carbon footprint material that can be used as binding agent of the product can be considered.
