The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental information for the enhancement of performance through kinematic analysis of cornering according to the radius of curve course in short track speed skating. To perform this study, 6 skaters who were at least formal backup national representative skaters were selected as study participants and 3 of them has a distinct tendency to skate in a narrow radius and the other 3 skaters has a distinct tendency to skate in a wide radius. With these study participants, 3D video analysis was conducted with 8 infrared cameras after setting up shooting section from the forth block starting to show the change of radius to the sixth block. With collected data, the radius of curve course, distance change between both feet on skate, the angle and angular velocity of lower extremity, and slope of each study participant were analysed. The results are as follows. When it comes to the distance change between both feet, the group skating in a narrow radius showed bigger change than the other group skating in a wide radius. At this moment, external forces take place and this seems to make it possible to skate in a narrower radius of curve course. Additionally, when performing same motion, the average linear velocity of the group skating in a narrow radius was found faster by approximately 0.5 m/sec. To look into the movement of the lower extremity angle, the group skating in a narrow radius showed bigger movement of flexion and extension, adduction and abduction, and rotation in the right ankle. Moreover, the change of the left knee joint from flexion to extension was found bigger by approximately 26° in the group skating in a narrow radius than the other group skating in a wide radius. The rotation angle of the left knee joint was also found bigger by approximately 17° in the group skating in a narrow radius than the other group skating in a wide radius and with regard to the angular change of the right knee joint from flexion to extension, the group skating in a narrow radius showed bigger by approximately 22° than the other group skating in a wide radius. Meanwhile, the angular change of the left hip joint from flexion to extension was found bigger by approximately 10° in the group skating in a narrow radius than the other group skating in a wide radius and that of the right hip joint was, on the other hand, found less by 13° in the group skating in a narrow radius. The angular velocity by each lower extremity joint was considered different according to individual skating styles. On top of that, although not statistically significant, the slope of the trunk was found less by approximately 7° in the group skating in a narrow radius than the other group skating in a wide radius. With all these study results considered, it is advisable to keep away from advanced extension of right knee joint, extend the stroke length of right foot further by making the left knee joint more flexed, and make bigger the using range of right ankle joint in the process of landing on a left foot after gliding a right foot.
