ABSTRACT A Study of the Factors influenced on the Process of Career Decision and Employment Retention of the Junior College Graduates Seung-Geun Lee Christian Public Administration Graduate School of Baekseok University The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors considered in the sociodemographic background, college education, job preparation behavior, job characteristic of Junior college graduates on career decision and employment retention. To analyze the factors for this study, three consecutive years GOMS(Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey) data from 2006 to 2008 were used. The sample of this study is divided into two groups, Group 1 and Group 2. The group 1 for career decision was 6,733 employed and 2,218 unemployed people. And the group 2 for job retention was 3,169 people who retained for three consecutive years and 1,156 people who changed their jobs over a span of three years. As a statistical package, SPSS for windows 15.0 program is used for frequency analysis, binary logistic regression analysis. First, this study was to analyze relative influence of the factors influence upon junior college graduates's career decision for 8,951 people who decide their career using binary logistic regression model. Second, this study was to analyze the decision factors Influence upon junior college graduates's employment retention for 4,325 people who decide their career using binary logistic regression model. This study results of first hypotheis were as follow. First, in sociodemographic background variables, the more the subjects were the male, younger age, unmarried, no high or low SES, specialized vocational high school graduates, no the students who leave of absence from college, the more the probability which junior college students get a job after graduation was increased. Second, in the factors influence upon junior college education affect students’ future career decision, the more they feel their prospective majors, the low satisfaction of their professors, the high satisfaction of programs were supported by their college, the more the probability which junior college students get a job after graduation was increased. Third, in the factors influence upon job preparation behavior affect students’ future career decision, the more they have private education for employment(less certificate, more national certificate), employment strategy(less learning conversational English, less TOEIC), the more the probability which junior college students get a job after graduation was increased. The second group of hypothesis test about job retention. The results of second hypothesis test are as follow. First, there were no significant effectiveness in the sociodemographic background variables. These results implies that these variables are not directly affected to retain their job. Second, in the factors influence upon junior college education affect students’ future career decision, the more they feel the low satisfaction of programs and high job supporting activities were supported by their college, the more the probability which junior college graduates retain their job was increased. Third, in the factors influence upon job preparation behavior affect students’ future career decision, the more they have employment strategy(more learning conversational English), the more the probability which junior college graduates retain their job was increased. Fourth, in the factors influence upon the job characteristic which was affect junior college graduates’ job retainment, the more they have a large-scale work place, the importance of their jobs(the high satisfaction of their work environment), type of business(transportation and communication service), type of occupation(a management position, no the culture art and broadcasting, IT professionals), the more the probability which junior college graduates retain their job was increased. Based on the results of the study, the following recommendations have been made: First, a career path system for of the lifelong career development and job retainment for Junior College students should be provided. Second, the academic advisor should spend more time calling in their students for a consultation about their career decision with affection. Third, more variables contributing to career decision-making and employment retention of Junior College students need to be explored.
