This research examines the characteristics and features of dolmen society through dolmen building technology and funeral rites. It is essential to investigate social structure and ideational problems (funeral rites, afterlife views, world views) around dolmen in the cognitive-processual archaeology perspective because research subjects, dolmen building technology, and funeral rituals, are difficult to understand only with the observance of material data. Thus, the research was investigated using multiple perspectives using experimental archaeology and ethnographic case research. First, through the Bronze Age period classification and chronology, the building period of dolmens is established, and the emergence of dolmens to their extinction is examined. Also, before I commence specific analysis of dolmen, I discuss the format and structure of dolmens. The morphological characteristics of dolmens are first separated according to the location of the burial chamber, and the remaining attributes are subdivided according to three elements of the dolmen: capstones, support stones, and burial chambers. Among these elements, burial chamber are divided into four types, box-shaped stone coffin, stone-built coffin, wooden coffin, and earthen pit tomb. Based on these classifications, the structures of dolmens with boundaries and capstones with multiple layers are reviewed, and it is found that they are not a new type but rather the attributes of dolmens developed diachronically, and this development is closely related to Songgungni (Songguk-ri) culture. Next, through modeling the building process of dolmens, building stages are established, and stone-processing techniques and building technologies applied are examined. Existing research achievements related to building technology are reexamined through reconstitution experimentation, a method of experimental archaeology. As a result, it is assumed that dolmens were built through the consistent supply of stones through the stone-producing system and the processing of such stones. I proffer that the building of dolmens was very efficient as expedient techniques and formalized techniques were harmoniously applied. Along with dolmen building, funeral rituals are investigated. Funeral rituals of dolmen lost to time, and are non-material ideational data. Thus, I first examine the flow of present-day funeral rituals through dolmens in Sumba Island, Indonesia. Based on this examination, the funeral rituals of Korean dolmens is compared and reviewed. Funeral rituals are separated into three stages according to stages of dolmen construction. Stage I of the rite is to decide the location of the graveyard and grave sector of a death-imminent individual. These rituals are mainly composed of the rituals of nature, animism, and earth deities. Stage II of the ritual starts when the individual actually dies, and rituals are performed while deciding the place where the body will be buried and during the making a grave chamber. According to the location and shape of the grave chamber, dolmens are examined after being divided into cover-stone-type and table-type. These two types have different shapes, but the fundamental aspect of the ritual was composed of building and burying rituals. Stage III of the ritual, based on respect for the buried individual, happens after completion grave construction and is mainly composed of continuous management and memorial service. The dolmens in Sumba Island, Indonesia provide crucial evidence for the research of Korean dolmens as they allow us to specifically confirm the building process of dolmens in each stage along with the rites related to interring the dead. Finally, based on information discussed above, the characteristics and features of dolmen society are concluded using diverse perspectives. There was certain system of producing and employing stones for dolmen building technology, and through this system, dolmens were built most efficiently. Also, during this process, the increase and expansion of dolmens related to social hierarchy, i.e. dolmens with boundaries, reflects the changes in societies of the Bronze Age. An economy based on agriculture supported this change, and through this subsistence strategy, dolmen society developed into hierarchical, complex society.
