Polymer insulating materials have been widely applied to electric power apparatuses and cables. XLPE (Cross Linked PolyEthylene) as one of insulating materials has been applied to high voltage cables for the operation of large power pools and power transmission from island and offshore power station. Even though XLPE cables have many excellent characteristics in higher AC transmission voltages and capacities, its use of EHV (Extra High Voltage) DC XLPE cable in more than 250kV class still hasn't been brought to realization. Recently, nano-composite materials prepared by addition of nano inorganic filler are attracting a lot of attention for improving the electrical properties of polymer insulation, such as space charge, resistivity, breakdown strength, etc. under high DC stress. However, the mechanism of the improvement of electric properties in XLPE with the addition of inorganic filler has not yet been clear. In this study, to better understand the effect of space charge properties, we prepared various MgO/XLPE composites with the MgO having controllable particle size between 50nm and 1µm. Especially, the particle size of MgO prepared by the precipitation method of the mixture of Mg(NO3)2 and NaOH or KOH as pristine precursors. The particle size of MgO was examined as a function of the alkali salt content in Mg(OH)2 powders and the calcination temperature. Investigation of the physical and chemical properties of the various MgO powders with dilution ratio and calcination temperature variation was done by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, BET specific surface area and thermal gravimetric analysis. These MgO particles were used for MgO/XLPE composites as inorganic fillers. Space charge property of composites were investigated the according to the contents and the size of MgO particles.
