Comparison of Lignin, Cellulose, and Hemicellulose Contents for Biofuels Utilization among Four Types of Lignocellulosic Crops :

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, human have been use fossil fuels. However, at this distance of time, using fossil fuels become an object of public concern with exhaustion of fossil fuels, emission of green-house gas (GHG), and high oil prices. So, many countries have been focused into alternative energy and the study of biomass for biofuel. Especially, lignocellulosic crops receive worldwide attention as transferable biomass resource for biofuel because of reducing economically cost, net carbon emission, and higher energy efficiency. And the materials with low lignin content among the three major component of biomass plant are evaluated to more valuable resource because the lignin is interrupt bioconversion of polysaccharides. To estimate more suitable lignocellulosic crops, this study compares the content of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose of miscanthus, switchgrass, sorghum, and reed (a total of 14 accessions according to collected site) with separated parts (leaves and stems). And that is appeared the contents % based on dry weight of sample. Among the crops, miscanthus is compared among the three species, M. sinensis, M. sacchariflorus, and M. x giganteus.
In conclusion, this study appears that miscanthus, switchgrass, and sorghum are valuable lignocellulosic crops based on significantly difference in lignin than reed, among the crops and between parts. Although switchgrass is recorded the highest content of polysaccharides among the crops, it is not significantly difference at 5 % significance level. And additionally, miscanthus that is one of the valuable crops is evaluated in three species (M. sinensis, M. sacchariflorus, and M. x giganteus). Among these miscanthus species, Miscanthus sacchariflorus is more valuable miscanthus species in both leaves and stalks. Furthermore, Miscanthus sacchariflorus species in miscanthus has lower lignin content and higher polysaccharides than switchgrass. So it is concerned that Miscanthus sacchariflorus species stack up to switchgrass, though the difference of values don’t mean significantly difference at 5 % significance level. Especially, Miscanthus sacchariflorus collected in Hacheonri, Jejudo, Korea (MFJH) is most valuable relatively as 14.12 % in lignin and 64.23 % in holocellulose. Therefore I suggest that miscanthus in Korea is competitive bioenergy crop comparing other crop in foreign country, such as switchgrass using a lot in USA.
