Biogas utilization has advantages of disposing of organic wastes, of performing energy use, and of reducing greenhouse gas. But, siloxanes, which exists in biogas in various types, is converted into SiO2 after burning. That is the main cause of impeding biogas utilization efficiency. Therefore, for efficient biogas utilization, it is necessary to control the occurrence of siloxanes or remove siloxanes through pre-processing prior to burning. Studies on perception of siloxanes and any relevant studies have hardly been conducted in Korea. And, it was found that it is needed to investigate how siloxanes affect utility facilities and examine the occurrence of siloxanes in biogas and its adsorptive feature. Therefore, this work was intended to investigate the adverse effects of siloxanes on biogas utility facilities, evaluate the occurrence and adsorption characteristics of siloxanes, and propose the optimal absorbent according to biogas. A massive amount of SiO2 caused by burning of siloxanes was found in a boiler of the 50MW landfill gas (LFG) utility facility installed in the Sudokwon landfill site. It was evaluated that adverse effects of siloxanes on the utility facility, such as damage to machine and stoppage of machine operation, were caused by high hardness of deposits. It was evaluated that, in the case of particles of deposits, thermal conductivity and bulk density lowered due to their filamentous structure, and that the deposits with which the boiler surface was covered impeded thermal conductivity in a steam turbine during the machine's normal operation. When siloxanes in biogas was collected through the absorption method with methanol solvent, it was found that polarity of methanol was increased by moisture in biogas, and that siloxanes collection efficiency decreased. The examination as to whether or not gas bag sampling can be applied revealed that the quality of a gas bag didn't lead to absorption losses of siloxanes or an increase in base density of siloxanes. When the standard gas produced in a gas bag was measured, its coefficient of determination was found to be more than 0.99. As a result, it was possible to analyze gas samples directly. In fact, for biogas sampling, solvent absorption method is the most proper, but for the gas whose moisture is in saturation or the biogas whose density changing range is small because of a storage vessel, it is considered that gas bag sampling could be applicable. As for siloxanes of LFG, the total density of siloxanes was 6.75 mg/m3 (1.85-13.25 mg/m3) on average, and the density of siloxanes in the landfill site where landfilling work was on the progress was higher than that in the landfill area where landfilling work was completed. Regarding occurrence characteristics by the molecular structure of siloxanes, it was found that cyclic siloxane showed the highest occurrence frequency and density, and that D4, D5 and L2 highly occurred. The test about siloxanes adsorption equilibrium with something mixed with L2, D4 and D5, the main siloxanes of biogas, showed that carbon adsorbents (coconut activated carbon, coal activated carbon, impregnated activated carbon ) was better than non-carbon adsorbents (silica gel, activated alumina) in removing mixed siloxanes. Coconut activated carbon adsorption of L2 was 0.123 (g L2/g Adsorbent), and coal activated carbon adsorption of D4 and D5 was 0.090 and 0.169 (g L2/g Adsorbent). Therefore, they were chosen as the optimal adsorbents in removing siloxanes. Regarding silica gel whose adsorption efficiency was similar to carbonic adsorbents' in terms of single component adsorption, its L2 adsorption efficiency was lower than carbonic adsorbents', but its D4 and D5 adsorption efficiency was the next highest to coal activated carbon. On the basis of characteristics of the occurrence and adsorption of siloxane, we can propose a preprocessing plan for efficient biogas utilization. Landfill gas has less moisture than anaerobic digestion gas (ADG), and causes the occurrence of L2 with high density so that coconut activated carbon, which has an excellent L2 adsorption capacity, is proper as an adsorbent. In the case of ADG, D5 and D4 highly occur, and a massive amount of moisture is included in the gas, so that silica gel is proper as an adsorbent. The properties of biogas are changeable by many different variables so that if, of the two-step adsorption tower, the first one uses silica gel and the second one uses coconut based activated carbon, it could be possible to secure safety in terms of moisture and L2.
