This study investigates the existence and phenomenon of light as a phenomenological subject in space, focusing on Steven Holl’s works. Also, beyond the conceptual frame of light as an ‘element’ of phenomenal space discussed in existing research on phenomenological architecture, it intends to approach the light as a ‘subject’ that reveals the phenomenon of space. According to phenomenological architectural thought and perception theory, Steven Holl embodies his architecture that revitalizes perception and cognition in the form of interweaving and forms metaphorical concepts from each project, focusing on the phenomenon of light as a subject of spatial creation. Based on this perspective and thinking of Steven Holl’s, this study aims at investigating the expression techniques and characteristics of ‘phenomenal light’ by approaching as color language with a variety of phenomena revealing by intended light in his work and exploring how to utilize and express the light for implementation of phenomenal space. The process is summarized as follows: (1) investigates the relationship between light and color, along with conceptual definition and typology of phenomenal light by phenomenal colors; (2) investigates the expression techniques and characteristics of phenomenal light shown in Steven Holl’s architecture; and finally, (3) suggests the methods to embody phenomenal space with light, by summarizing the concepts, expression techniques and characteristical meanings of phenomenal light. The final meanings and characteristics of phenomenal light shown in Steven Holl’s architectural space are as follows: (1) Perceptual colors by sensual light create various perceptions and textures of light and shadow according to the contrast of shades and the change of materiality, thus embodying expansive space with the light as the medium approach that helps to experience formal and tactile senses; (2) Spatial colors by volumetric light induce the flow and movement of sight and embody inducing space with the light as an informal activity that forms the spatial atmosphere with the light mass concentrated or superposed; (3) Existential colors by light of light source visualize the uncertain phenomena of light source and embody the receptive space with the light as a sensitive communication that forms symbolic and psychological meanings through metaphorical phenomena of colored light. Based on the expression methods and characteristics of phenomenal light in Steven Holl’s architectural space which are explored up to Chapter 4, Chapter 5 focuses on a library in Paju Book City as a case to embody the phenomenal space that maximizes sensitivity by forming sensual sequence. In this way, the phenomenal light seen as a subject includes time as a variable factor, which forms more abundant layers of experience, combines them with human senses and gives important meanings to the interpretation of space in a phenomenological perspective.
