Duplex stainless steel have been increasingly used for a variety application in marine construction, chemical industries and power plants, due to their excellent combination of mechanical property and corrosion resistance. It is well known that such good properties depend on to the two-phase microstructure consisting of approximately equal amounts of austenite(γ) and δ-ferrite. However, the deterioration in toughness and in corrosion resistance as a result of exposure to high temperatures, which is the case during fabrication, is a typical problem to users of duplex stainless steels. Indeed, the undesirable phases such as intermetallic phases, carbides and nitrides may exist in the steels and profoundly affect their properties if the manufacturing processes are not properly controlled. Among these secondary precipitates, σ phase with fast formation kinetics has been particularly noticed since it can cause a drastic deterioration in toughness and in corrosion resistance. The aim of the study are to analyze high temperature deformation stability and properties of duplex stainless steels (DSS) depending on annealing temperature and to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels. In order to analyze high temperature deformation stability, a number of compression tests were carried out with at stain rate, of 10-2s-1~10s-1up to the compression ratio 50% in the range of temperature, 950℃~1300℃. The analysis of high temperature deformation stability of DSS was performed based on Ziegler model. In order to analyze high temperature properties of DSS, annealing treatments were conducted by isothermal holding for 1hr at 950℃ to 1300℃ with 50℃ interval followed by water cooling. The hardness and tensile tests were performed on specimens with different volume fraction of constituent phases such as austenite, ferrite and sigma. The hardness and tensile strength of 2507 depending on annealing temperature are better than those of 2205. The strain rate sensitivity and Ziegler parameter are higher in 2205 rather than in 2507 as a whole, which implies that 2205 is better than 2507 in terms of forgeability at high temperature. In order to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels, Heat treatment was carried out at 1,050 oC for 1hr at 1050℃, followed by controlled cooling. The cooling rates were 10.5 ℃/min, 2 ℃/min, 1 ℃/min, 0.7 ℃/min, 0.35 ℃/min and 0.17 ℃/min, which resulted in the variation of the microstructures such as the fractional change offer its phase and sigma phase formation. The fatigue, hardness, impact and tensile tests were performed on the specimens with different cooling rates. The precipitation of s phase caused hardness increase and sharp decrease of toughness and tensile elongation. The fatigue limit of the sample with cooling rate 0.35 oC/ min was 26 MPa higher than that of the sample with cooling rate, 10.5℃/min. It is concluded from the observation of the fracture surface that the higher fatigue resistance of the specimen with cooling rate, 0.35 ℃/min was caused by the delay of the fatigue crack growth, in addition to their higher yield strength.
