The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise and adlay pill intake in obese middle school girl students.
Thirty-two healthy, obese (percentage of body fat, > 30%) Jurye girls' middle school students composed of the aerobic exercise & adlay pill intake group (A, n=8), the aerobic exercise group (B, n=8), the adlay pill intake group (C, n=8), and the control group(D, n=8).
The variables of health-related fitness, blood lipid profile, CRP, NO and vascular compliance were measured in all the subjects before the start of the exercise program and after the end of 12-week aerobic exercise.
The test data were analyzed by paired t-test and one way ANOVA, and the alpha level of p<.05 was set for all tests of significance.
The findings of this study were as follows;
1. Health-related fitness
1) The cardiorespiratory endurance in A and B groups had significantly increased. The cardiorespiratory endurance in A and B group was significantly higher than those in C and D groups.
2) The muscular endurance and flexibility in A and B groups had significantly increased, and the flexibility in A group was higher than that in D group.
3) The % body fat was significantly lower for the A, B, and C groups compared to the D group, and % body fat in A group was significantly lower than that in D group.
4) LBM and SMM in A group had significantly increased.
2. Blood lipid profiles, C-reactive protein and Nitric oxide
1) The HDL-C in A group had significantly increased.
2) The LDL-C in A and B groups had significantly decreased.
3) The CRP in A and B groups had significantly decreased, and CRP was significantly lower for the A and B group compared to the D group.
4) The nitric oxide in B and D groups had significantly decreased.
3. Vascular Compliance
1) A group had a significantly decreased, and the vascular compliance in A group was significantly decreased compared with the D group.
In conclusion, the results of this study showed that regular exercise and adlay pill intake improve health-related fitness, blood lipid profiles, C-reactive protein, nitric oxide and vascular compliance in obese middle school girl students. Especially, the various studies on the aerobic exercise programs and adlay pill intake are needed to decrease the obese youth with irregular dietary life and underexercise.
