This study analyzed the symbolism in Han Young-suk style Taepyungmu to find the aesthetic value of Taepyungmu in that Dodang-gut(traditional Korean exorcism) implies a ritualistic meaning, departing from aesthetic consciousness, believing in the standard sense of dance in Taepyungmu. So we focussed on how, in which form, the purpose of Dodang-gut, from Gyeonggi province, was symbolized in Taepyungmu, based on the idea of 'living in this world' and 'chasing away devils and welcoming happiness'.
Dodang-gut functioned mainly to comfort the guardians of the villages in order for residents to 'reduce misfortune and attract fortune', and served to ask for prosperity and good fortune through the grace of the guardians. Han Young-suk style Taepyungmu was an artistic dance, based on Shaman music and Shaman dance, originating from Dodang-gut. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to find the ritualistic meaning, inherent in Dodang-gut, in its symbolism, in the development process and dancing movements of Taepyungmu, and Shaman music.
Firstly, we analyzed the procedure of Dodang-gut, as it appears and is implied in Taepyungmu; With regard to Chungsin (calling the spirits) - Sintak (oracle) - Osin (entertaining the spirits) - Songsin (sending spirits) which are basic procedures of Dodang-gut as are the processes of dance; introduction - beginning - development - ending.
The Chungsin aspect, where people stand in a row, welcoming the Dodang god in Dodang-gut, connoted and appearing in the introduction of Taepyungmu, and the Sintak-Osin aspect, the praying for the god and entertaining with the god, could be linked to the early development of Taepyungmu. This was the part that the god could enjoy through the highly qualified dancing movements and in which the audience could also participate with joy and laughter. Songsin, the last part of Dodaong-gut, was the process of sending the god back from where it had come, the burning of bad luck after gathering together and enjoying the communion, and, this part, can be connected to the last scene of Taepyoungmu, the opening and stretching of both arms upwards, face to the sky, implying the sending of the god back to his 'home'.
In the dance movements, two were selected as examples; 'Yeodeolpalja' movement - the stretching of both arms towards the sky symbolising the praying for 'living in the sentient world'; and 'Hoemu' (spinning) symbolizing self-effacement, and the union of heaven and humans. In addition, symbolizing the 'chasing away of devils and welcoming happiness', there were 'leg-lifting Doyumche', 'double-stepping Ttwimche', kicking the floor to chase away bad luck and stamping on the ground, wishing for good luck.
Lastly, Shaman music is a medium of heaven and human as it already bears a significant symbolic meaning through the characteristics of percussion, and Shaman music, playing with Samhyeonyukgak itself, is the emblem of harmony.
As a result of examining this symbolism, Taepyungmu appears to manifest the ritualistic meaning of Dodang-gut, and, the fact that one can enjoy and share the ecstasy through art and dance, must have had an aesthetic value beyond the defined form of Taepyungmu as if developing a community spirit through exorcism. In addition, Taepyungmu could be regarded as a resurrected art, generated from between royal garments, the symbol of heaven, Shaman music, the symbol of the public, and folk dance, as if Shaman music creates a refreshing gem from the harmony of different musical instruments. Thus, Taepyungmu is a dance which contains harmony and balance in the field of dance.
The refreshing part appearing in Taepyungmu, from the combination of all disparate factors, is that it is driven from unlimited imagination and is the basis for the development of art and this is the fundamental factor and power for an artist. The union of this imagination must be the reason for Taepyungmu surviving for over 100 years of history, and being passed on and developed with achieving recognition until now.
We hope this study will open people's view towards Taepyungmu in various ways, and offer the opportunity for continued research and re-interpretation, and the rediscovery of the new aesthetic values.
