The rapid increase in South Korea’s elderly population and the lengthened old age in the country have caused the South Korean society to be concerned about the quality of life of the elderly. The elderly themselves also strive hard to live an active life. In this context, studies on successful aging have been actively conducted to heighten the quality of life of the elderly, for their life satisfaction during old age, based on the understanding that aging is a part of human growth.
Successful aging refers to the state thatan aged individual can accomplish his or her goals by adjusting to his or her aging, including mental, social, and situational problems as well as health and maintenance of physical functions. It is also the state of acceptance of one’s past and current situations, and of living a high-quality life while pursuing the meaning of life and realizing one’s goals.
This study aimed to suggest how to make the elderly participate in club activities for successful aging by understanding the current situation of the elderly’s participation in club activities, researching on the relationship between this and successful aging, and determining how much it contributes to successful aging.
For this study, successful aging was measured using the sociodemographic characteristics of the respondents and the characteristics related to club activities as the variables. A survey was carried out from November 13-24, 2012 among 275 elderly persons who were 60 years old or over and who were participating in club activities in Seoul Senior Welfare Center, and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 14.0.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, there was no significant difference in the degree of successful aging by gender and between those with and without a religion and those with and without a spouse in the results of the t-test and one-way ANOVA, which were conducted to understand the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics and the successful aging of the respondents. Age and educational background showed a significant difference only in positive participation in life, which is a subfactor of successful aging. Health condition, economic status, and family relationship were all found to be statistically significant for successful aging; that is, when a respondent had a better health condition, a higher economic status, and a better relationship with the other members of his or her family, the degree of his or her successful aging seemed to be higher.
Second, there was no significant difference in the degree of successful aging by the degree of participation in club activities, the kinds of club activities, the reason for participating in such activities, and the participation channel in the results of the t-test and one-way ANOVA. The degree of successful aging by the duration of participation in club activities showed a statistically significant difference only in positive participation in life, which is a subfactor of successful aging. The activeness of club activity participation, the relationship among the participants, the fitness for participation in club activities, and the degree of satisfaction with the club activities were all found to be statistically significant for successful aging; that is, when a respondent participates more actively in club activities, has a better relationship with the other club activity participants, is more fit to participate in such activities, and is more satisfied with his or her participation, he or she has a higher degree of successful aging.
Third, to determine the factors that influence successful aging, including the sociodemographic characteristics of the respondents and the characteristics of the club activities, multiple-regression analysis was used. The subfactors of successful aging were autonomous life, positive participation in life, self-efficacy, and sense of self-integrity. The determinants of autonomous life were fitness for participation in club activities and the relationship among the participants; those of positive participation in life were the activeness of club activity participation, fitness for participation in club activities, and the relationship among the club activity participants; those of self-efficacy were activeness of club activity participation, fitness forparticipation in club activities, and the relationship among the participants; and those of sense of self-integrity were activeness of club activity participation, the relationship among the participants, and fitness for participation in club activities. Finally, the determinants of successful aging were found to be fitness for club activities, activeness of club activity participation, and the relationship among the participants. The results showed that when one considers club activities fit for him or her, participates in them more actively, and has a good relationship with the other club activity participants, the degree of successful aging seems to be higher.
This study is important in that it is the first domestic dissertation on the club activities of the elderly and provided the basis for the study of the degree of successful aging. It also suggested that club activities for the elderly should be activated from the point of view of social welfare, by drawing the conclusion that club activities for the elderly significantly affect successful aging through empirical testing.
