Optical instruments are the most effective means of delivering and sharing plenty of information. An auto-focusing device is an indispensable component to the optical instrument for achieving high-quality optical signal. Optofluidic devices which combine optic and microfluidic fields are attractive for applying to miniature optical systems. This thesis describes the design, fabrication, and characterization of two different optofluidic devices that enable dynamic focusing. Unlike conventional approaches based on mechanically movable elements, such as voice-coil motors, stepping motors, and piezoelectric ultrasonic motors, the adaptive liquid lenses focus themselves. The adaptive liquid lenses presented in this thesis are based on electro-mechanical actuations i.e. electrowetting of a conductive liquid and electromagnetic bending of an elastomeric membrane. The electrowetting lens provides dynamic focusing by means of wetting of a refractive liquid under electric field. In case of the elastomeric membrane lens, change in curvature of the elastomeric membrane containing a refractive liquid results in dynamic focusing. The electrowetting lens described in this thesis uses a hemispherical electrowetting platform in order to achieve an effective change in focal length with a small hysteresis and reduce an optical aberration as well as the geometrical stress concentration. The electrowetting lens was realized on a silicon wafer by using conventional bulk micromachining and thin film processes. The silicon cavity for the hemispherical electrowetting platform was formed by the developed deep isotropic wet etching (DIWE) technique. The DIWE process enables forming of a wafer level high-aspect ratio hemispherical silicon cavity with mirror-like surface. Heterogeneous surface obtained by the patterned film with low surface energy enables easy and hermetic sealing of lens liquids. Compared to micromachined electrowetting lenses with different shape of platform i.e. truncated pyramid, the proposed lens has improved characteristics in driving voltage (3.5 Vrms), focus hysteresis (<0.1 mm), and distortion aberration (4.3%). In order to generate effectively an electromagnetic force, the actuator of the elastomeric membrane lens was designed to have optimized geometry based on the simulation results. The designed elastomeric membrane lens was rapidly machined by CNC micromilling of a PMMA wafer, even though it should be more miniaturized. The developed indirect bonding using SiO2 (IBUS) is useful for PDMS–thermoplastic bonding in polymer MEMS devices. Considering the elastomeric membrane lenses operated by various actuations, the designed lens has several competitive edges. Compared to the popular piezoelectric membrane lens, the designed lens is more compact and has larger numerical aperture (0.07), higher focus tunability (67 diopters), and much lower focus hysteresis (<1 mm). When the designed lens compared with other elastomeric membrane lenses based on thermopneumatic, electrostatic, and electromagnetic actuations, it responses quickly (2 ms). Along with their driving characteristics, the liquid lenses presented in this thesis can be applied to various miniature optical systems.
