In order to explore the future development potential of rice milling machine in Korea, this study examined the developmental history of rice milling machine's structure and performance and investigated structure and performance of commercially available rice milling machines. Then, it analyzed the relation between them and recognized the problems. A summary of the results is as follows. 1. This study investigated the developmental history of rice milling machines' structure. As a result, in the 1970s, the rice milling performance was 60 ㎏/h and the one-pass type without hulling process. However, in the 2010s, it showed that the rice milling performance was between 200 and 300 ㎏/h and the rice polishing process added various functions such as hulling process, stone sorting, broken rice and foreign body separator in order to improve the performance and quality of rice milling. 2. This study investigated the developmental history of rice polishing machine's performance. As a result, the milled rice and head rice recovery rate increased from 68.4% and 73.1 % in the 1980s to 74.6% and 88.9% in the 2010s. It means that the performance was improved by 8.3% and 17.8%, respectively. 3. This survey of the rice milling machine for farmhouse was conducted. As a result, most of the hulling devices were impeller type and 4,800 rpm was most frequently used as normal rotation speed accounting for 39.3%. In addition, the most commonly used data were shown as follows: between 176 and 185 mm long component accounting for 37.9%, 1.2 mm thick slot accounting for 79.3%, 15 mm long slot accounting for 96.6% and 70-degree slot angle of metal screen accounting for 89.7%. 4. This study analyzed the effect of rice milling machine's structure for farmhouse on performance. As a result, the hulling device showed the highest hulling ratio, 99.45% when the impeller rotated at 4,800 rpm. In the rice milling equipment, the milled rice recovery rate was the highest, the rice loss rate and broken rice rate were the lowest when the rotor's velocity was at 2 m/s. It showed the rice milling performance was good. 5. This study analyzed the rice milling machine's problems for farmhouse. As a result, regardless of the time when the exports of rice milling machine have increased recently, there have been problems: not suitable for rice milling of long grain variety, low durability of rice milling component and not effective in brown rice separation and stone sorting process. Therefore, in order to increase the milled rice recovery rate and rice milling quality of the rice milling machine for farmhouse and to enhance the durability, we considered that it required effective process design, structural changes and enhancement and standardization of the component durability such as rotor and metal screen. Furthermore, we considered that it required the development of a rice milling machine for export according to an increase in exports of rice milling machine.
