The purpose of this study was to determine the effect that the exercise volume of aged women who exercise regularly would have on basal metabolic rate(BMR), melatonin, and serotonin by season and the effect of exercise volume on bone density in order to obtain the data which might be useful for the exercise prescription for the health management of aged women who exercise regularly. To validate this study, 7 aged women who were 70 years old or older, who attended the cultural class(computer, caligraphy, literary works), besides the exercise, at 2 Elderly Welfare Centers in Incheon, and 13 aged women who had played the gate ball regularly for more than 3 years, were divided into HE-G with n=6(180min/day, 5/week or more) and ME-G with n=7(60min/day, 3/week) based on the routine exercise volume(frequency of exercise, exercise volume). The resting heart rate of both exercise groups was 65-70 beat/min on the average, and the exercise intensity of gate ball exercise program was 50-55% HRmax in HE-G and ME-G. The effect on the bone density was determined based on the BMR, melatonin, serotonin and exercise volume, depending on the season, and the following conclusion was drawn: 1. BMR had more positive effect on aged women who exercised regularly. The BMR increased as the exercise volume increased, and decreased in all groups in summer(late winter). 2. Melatonin had more positive effect than CON for aged women who exercise regularly. However, melatonin level decreased more than CON in summer in the group that exercised(HE-G, ME-G), and showed more reduction compared to CON in spring(late winter) as the exercise volume increased(HE-G). 3. Serotonin had more positive effect than CON for aged women who exercise regularly. However, serotonin level decreased more than CON in summer and spring(late winter) as the exercise volume increased (HE-G), and the moderate exercise quantity(ME-G) comprised the highest proportion among all groups in all seasons. 4. Total bone density showed significant difference in terms of the decrease in total bone density of right femur and left femur after 6 months. However, an increase in bone density and slowdown in the decrease of bone density were observed as the exercise volume increased. 5.The calcitonin decreased and showed a significant difference among the exercise group after 6 months. However, high calcitonin level and slowdown in the decrease of calcitonin were observed as the exercise volume increased. By taking the aforesaid results from a comprehensive standpoint, it was found that the regular exercise had a positive effect on the stimulation of BMR, melatonin, and serotonin compared to non-exercise. The BMR was higher as the volume of excercise increased, and showed difference in the decrease among all groups in spring(late winter), which implies physical restriction other than the exercise due to the seasonal factor that makes it difficult to exercise. The levels of melatonin and serotonin were found to be affected by the exercise volume, depending on the season, and decreased in summer and spring(late winter) when the exercise volume was high. Moderate exercise volume (ME-G) was found to account for the highest percentage in all seasons, except for the melatonin in summer, and serotonin was found to be the best among the groups in all seasons. This suggests that it would be better to avoid the exercise involving much external exposure in the seasons characterized by high temperature and low temperature in order to stimulate the neurohormone because the reduction in melatonin and serotonin during summer and spring(late winter) has a negative effect as a result of the decrease in neurohormone due to the seasonal temperature and exercise stress as the exercise volume increases. Among all seasons, moderate exercise in winter led to an increase in melatonin, serotonin, whereas the serotonin increased in autumn when exercise volume increased(HE-G). Based on those changes, the melatonin and serotonin levels were found to be adjustable by controlling the exercise volume in each season. In other words, the reduced level of outdoor exercise volume in summer and the moderate exercise quantity(ME-G) in autumn led to an increase in melatonin, and it was found that the serotonin level increased proportionally to the exercise volume(HE-G). In addition, moderate exercise volume(ME-G) in winter and spring increased the synthesis of melatonin and serotonin, which implies that adjustment of exercise volume to a level suitable for each season could increase the stimulation of melatonin and serotonin. The total bone density of right and left femur showed a decrease in all groups(HE-G, ME-G, CON). The calcitonin level also exhibited a decrease in all groups(HE-G, ME-G, CON). However, the increase in the exercise volume led to higher bone density and the slowdown in the reduction of bone density. The increased exercise volume also led to high level of calcitonin and slowed down the reduction of calcitonin level. In this period, the supplements and regular mid-level exercise load are considered to have more positive effect on the bone density and calcitonin level of aged women. Moreover, it is considered necessary to conduct the subsequent studies from multifaceted perspectives on a long-term basis, which can be applied to the health management and exercise prescription for aged women who exercise regularly.
