The purpose of this study was to comparatively examine the musical form of every movement and play bowing technique of every edition of Cesar Frank’s Sonata for Piano and Violin A Major, a song for the investigator’s graduation performance for master’s degree. Through comparison with the diversty of scores, I choose the original music script of Henle's edition, which is interpreted 3type scores of Edition Breitkop, Lichtenberg and Edition Peters, diffrently and analyzed it.
One of representative composers in late-romanticism, Frank combined his works with German classical music form and French romantic rendering and mainly used chromatic melodies, frequent preludes and circulation techniques.
In his one and only violin sonata, Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, he tried to present the music in romantic era, which had become diversified and complex within the classical frame that consisted of four movements of sonata form. This song seemingly has the form of classical music, but the characteristic of every movement is slightly different and romantic hue is added in its rendering. In addition, it uses circulation of bowing techniques, which frequently appear in the works of romantic era. He transforms and develops 3 thematic motives in this work and uses them across the song, thus trying to express the sense of unity.
Different from previous the violin sonatas in which piano merely played an assistant role to violin, this work expands the sound range of piano and places piano in the equal position to the violin. In this vein, this work must be performed as if piano and the violin form an ensemble.
Based on general understanding on this piece, this study comparatively examined the musical score of Sonata for violin and piano in A Major, focusing on Edition Breitkop, Lichtenberg and Edition Peters, out of a variety of edition scores, and then looked into its play techniques, focusing on bowing. As a result, there was no distinctive difference in editions, but every edition differently explained harmonic changes, melodic changes and volume controls in every movement, thus presenting bowing.
In this study, the researcher comparatively examined three editions of Cesar Frank’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major and presented the bowing that was used in the researcher`s performance. The researcher`s hopes this study to be a guide for those who will perform this piece in the future.
