The cutting process is material-removal process by directly applying physical force to material. Predicting forces in machining process is very important for economical operation of the process or the safety and performance of the machined product. Recently, according to the industrial development, the companies require the higher material performances which have high hardness and stability for high temperature and chemical. For that reason demand for cutting technique of brittle material such as glass, ceramic, diamond is increasing. However, despite of many efforts, general predictive cutting model has not been made yet. Because it is very difficult due to the fact that large deformation of workpiece and Complexity in the cutting process. In the brittle materials, it is also difficult to simulate the behavior of the material due to difference in the fracture mechanism between brittle and ductile materials. In this paper, the cutting model which can predict cutting force was developed by using the finite element method. The comparison with Samuel's experimental results to validate the cutting model was also performed. In addition, to investigate behavior of brittle material, the brittle cutting model was developed by using the SPH method and compared with existing Lagrange method to verify the suitability of cutting model.
