Nowadays, industrial development, urbanization and population growth have increased water consumption resulting to the scarcity of available fresh water. Water shortage will aggravate unless we continue our efforts to develop new alternative ways to secure sustainable water supply. Wastewater reuse is an example of how to combat this problem. This approach has been applied in many developed countries including South Korea and has already increased its application from 2.9 % in 2000 to 10.9 % in 2010. Recently, RO process has been widely used in the water industry. RO process can generate high quality water; however, it yields wastewater that is three to five times higher the solute concentration of the influent being treated. Since RO concentrate is definitely higher than permissible effluent water quality, it requires rigorous treatment. If it has not further processing, it cannot spend effluent. RO concentrate contains non-readily biodegradable organic matter, has very high salinity, concentrated T-N and T-P, and sometimes includes toxic substances that are not susceptible to microbial degradation. In wastewater treatment process for RO concentrate, the success of biological nutrient removal is hindered by the inhibitory effect of very high salinity to activated sludge microbial communities. This could be one reason to further research on the development of new processes and system design. The study investigated the use of MBR process for the treatment of RO concentrate. The MBR was evaluated based on the removal of nutrients and organic matter from the influent (TN, NH3-N, TP and COD). Initially, ROconcentrate was directly fed into the MBR ; however, this resulted to poor removal performance due high salinity which has toxic effect on microbial cells in activated sludge. PAC addition has been reported to improve biological nutrient removal by adsorption of toxic compounds and the formation of biological activated carbon. To investigate the effect of PAC on the biological treatment of RO concentrate, two MBR systems, MBR1 (with PAC) and MBR2 (without PAC), were operated under the same conditions. The removal performances lightly improved with the addition of PAC. Stepwise increase in the concentration of feed may resolve the toxic effect to activated sludge microorganisms of directly feeding the RO concentrate in MBR. To test this hypothesis, the RO concentrate were diluted to different final concentrations prior feeding into the MBR: 0%, 10% and 20%. Synthetic wastewater was used as diluent. Dilution of the RO concentrate (10% and 20%) resulted to good removal performance except for TP. Also, as the RO concentrate mix ratio (RO concentrate: synthetic wastewater) increased, much longer time was needed for the treatment (10%: 15-35 days, 20%: 36-50 days). With step-wise increase of RO concentrate feed, the activated sludge microorganisms gradually become tolerant to increasing salinity; hence, high removal performance can be achieved through time. Electrolysis is one of the currently available technologies for wastewater treatment. To compare its performance with MBR for the treatment of RO concentrate, a separate batch experiment was conducted. Insoluble electrodes (IE) were used for electrolysis experiment with RO concentrate. The performance was evaluated by measuring TN, TP, NH3-N and COD before and after the treatment. The results showed the following removal : 56% ,DOC ; 32% ,TP ; 8% ,TN ; 16%, TDS ; and fairly good chromaticity.
