This study is a research on the mental health differences of the elderly depending on whether they have companion animals or not. Especially its focus on the demographic characteristics and the mental health (anxiety, social adaptation, depression, frequency of going out) gap of the elderly depending on whether they were companion animals or not. The subject and scope of this study are included the elderly people of over 60 years of age people who had scattered in Seoul, Gyeonggi province and Jeju Island which selected on a random convenient basis. The respondents of the field work survey are included 120 people who were keeping companion animals and 120's who were not. As a result of the execution of the survey, 111 cases were collected from people who had companion animals and 99 cases were collected from people who did not reaching to a total of 210 responses which were used in the analysis. Main method is the Korean version of KGHQ (Korean General Health Questionnaire) measurements for cover to the mental health which was developed by Shin (2001). The question items that formed the survey consisted of; the type of companion animals which is the demographic general characteristic, number of raised years, sex, age, education, existence of a house-mate, type of residence, income level, and religion adding up to 9 elements and criterion for evaluating the state of mental health (5 questions related to anxiety, 9 questions related to social adaptation, 5 questions related to depression, and 1 question regarding frequency of going out. Total of 20 questions) As a result of the study, with demographic characteristics are; Men and less education record persons are breed companion animals less than women and higher scholarship. Thirdly, there was a difference in the frequency of going out element between the people who had companion animals and who didn't. As a final note, the conclusion that was reached through this research was that companion animals when people are in their elderly stage do help to reduce the anxiety level and raises the social adaptation and also helps them to maintain a healthy frequency of going out.
