The purpose of this study is to illuminate self-directed experience of art therapy conducted from Mahler's point of view is effective for reducing hearing-impaired children's anxiety, enhance self-esteem by experiencing an initiative role and give a new birth of herself. The subject child for this study is a third-grade female student diagnosed as a first-class hearing impairment attending an elementary school, who shows difficulties with peer relation, high level of anxiety, low-level of self-respect, and remorse, so was referred to us by her mother. Each of the total 62 sessions of this individual case was conducted at Welfare centers in the operatory for 40minites, once a week from Aug. 2011 to Nov, 2012. Mahler conceived child's psychological development process as the stages of autism, symbiosis, separation-individualization, object-constancy, and explained the psychological birth process of a child by each development stage. This study divided the art therapy process of a hearing-impaired child with low-level of self-esteem by stage based on Mahler's development theory, and explored the change. First, the initial stage formulating stability to the child is the autism, symbiosis, which was seen as a stage providing psychological stability for the anxious child through the art therapy. Second, the middle stage is a process to reduce the child's anxiety through a voluntary and creative experience, which was divided as a separation-individualization stage. The last final stage is a object constancy in which the child gets out of a dependent and passive picture and changes to a voluntary and active picture. In other words, this process is a psychological development process achieving the child's psychological birth and separation-individualization, whose process this study analyzed by each stage and session. This study explored what effect does this art herapy process has on theanxiety and self-esteem of the hearing-impaired child with following assessment methods. For assessment, changes were analyzed through preliminary and post evaluations with measures including K-WISC-Ⅲ, SCT, and BGT, and picture tests including HTP and KFD. and analyzed changes of the child's self-respect and anxiety through created things and plays changed in pre - and post assessment and session, and analyzed changes in daily life through counselling between the main fosterer, mother and cognition therapist. The following results are acquired from this study. First, art therapy is effective in changing negative-image to oneself and forming a positive self as it formulates stability and express anxiety to a hearing-impaired child. Second, art therapy is effective in having a hearing-impaired child get out of a dependant state and improve self-respect through a dominant and creative media experience. Third, art therapy is effective in achieving separation-individuation through psychological birth as a hearing-impaired child experiences an initial object relation, and forms a positive mother-child relation. In conclusion, this study clarify that art therapy works for reducing the anxiety of a hearing-impaired child, and is helpful in changing internal negative image to positive-self, and improving self-respect, and independently and autonomously changing through separation-individuation.
