Nanomaterials have attracted significant attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties due to their high surface-to-volume ratio or quantum effects. Especially, Pt-based bimetallic nanoparticles and nanowires are being recognized as catalysts and sensors. It is important to understand their atomic structure and thermodynamic properties to maximize engineering applications. However, detailed structural information of bimetallic nanoparticles and nanowires is scarce. In this study, a new empirical potential model, added simple but powerful term to Voter’s EAM (embedded atom method), which could tune melting point of 5 fcc metals(Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Pt) is suggested. Hybrid Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are performed to predict the most energetically stable atomic arrangement of various Pt-based nanoparticles and nanowires (Au-Pt, Ag-Pt, Cu-Pt, and Pd-Pt): a core-shell structure (Ag@Pt and Au@Pt) for Ag-Pt alloy and Au-Pt alloy nanoparticles/nanowires, an onion-like multi-shell structure for the Cu-Pt alloy nanoparticles and nanowires, an intermetallic compound for Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles. We believe that this study can provide theoretical standard for design of various bimetallic nanomaterials.
