This study attempted to look into main causes and effects of family resilience of alcoholic families that made successful adaptations in the relationship between family stress and family adaptation by viewing alcoholic families based on a strength perspective. This study ultimately aimed to present grounds that promoted positive changes and successful family adaptation of alcoholic families and to seek an intervention plan in the mental health field. To achieve this purpose, this study conducted a survey for family members who took the substantial responsibility for the primary protection provision for alcoholics who had been in hospital for more than three months with the purpose of the continuous treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Ulsan. The study carried out technical statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and moderated regression analysis on the data collected from 235 people by using SPSS 19.0 program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, among main variables in accordance with alcoholic families' general characteristics, it was shown that family stress was affected by monthly income, the level of education, family resilience was influenced by marital status, religion, and monthly income, and family adaptation was influenced by marital status, religion, and monthly income. Second, as alcoholic families' stress exerted a negative effect on family adaptation, it was analyzed that the more stress of alcoholic family, the lower level of family adaptation. Third, it was proved that there was a moderating effect as family resilience played a role of a moderating variable that controls not only major effects but also the level of family adaptation in the correlation between stress of alcoholic family and family adaptation. Therefore, it would be important to have a family group treatment program that could improve family resilience and the intervention by subfactor of family resilience including family self-help groups so that alcoholic families could make a successful adaptation even though they were under stress. They are concretely as follows. First, it was necessary to have a family program that core elements such as family trust and unity, right awareness, positive views, transcendence and spirituality were meaningfully applied and the whole family shared and participated in together rather than an individual consultation as the intervention in the belief system. Second, it was also needed to establish a family support network based on a family program and a local community, which could lead a consistent and flexible change and friendly and supportive relationship formation within the family, and receive the use of proper socioeconomic resources, acceptance of role changes and re-cohesion, and support for role performance as the intervention in types of organizations. Third, it was considered to have the intervention that aimed to clarify family communication and improve mutual trust and affinity, and the intervention through diverse and systematic group programs that intended to increase family problem solving skills as the intervention in communication
