A machine tool is a powered mechanical device, typically used to fabricate metal components of machines by machining, which is the selective removal of metal. Machine tools are high production cost factors in modern production. Whether high production volume or high manufacturing quality is the focus of the production - machine tool failure usually cause production loss. Especially damages in mechanical components usually cause long lasting maintenance procedures for exchanging components resulting in high production losses. The concept of tool condition monitoring has gained considerable importance in the manufacturing industry. This is mainly attributed to the transformation of the manufacturing environment from manually operated production machines to CNC machine tools and the highly automated CNC machining centers. For modem machine tools, 20% of the downtime is attributed to tool failure, resulting in reduced productivity and economic losses. A reliable monitoring system could prevent these problems and allow optimum utilization of the tool life, which is highly desirable. The subject of machine condition monitoring is charged with developing new technologies to diagnose the machinery problems. Different methods of fault identification have been developed and used effectively to detect the machine faults at an early stage using different machine quantities, such as current, voltage, speed, efficiency, temperature and vibrations. One of the principal tools for diagnosing rotating machinery problems has been the vibration analysis. Through the use of different signal processing techniques, it is possible to obtain vital diagnostic information from vibration profile before the equipment catastrophically fails. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique is a nondestructive test method, AE is a microseismic (elastic) wave generated from dislocations, microcracking and other irreversible changes in a stressed material. The transmitted waves are detected by transducers on the surface of a specimen. Aside from applications in geophysics and in geotechnical engineering, AE technique has been mainly developed to monitor and inspect structures because an increase of acoustic activity is generally a very sensitive precursor to failure of structural components. The scientific application of acoustic emission (AE) technology first emerged in the 1950's, but appeared to fall out of fashion from the late 1970’'s onwards. However with the increased focus on cost effective ways of optimizing machine and equipment reliability and availability, AE is now experiencing an important renaissance as a valuable condition based monitoring (CBM) and predictive maintenance tool. Leading industrial consultants AV Technology, who design and manufacture their own range of AE sensors and instrumentation, are pioneering new ways of applying this versatile technology across a wide range of industries and applications. Therefore, in this paper, a signal processing method for AE signal by hilbert transform is used. For the detection of faults generated by gear systems, a gearbox was installed in the test rig system. In gearbox, misalignment was seeded, through the 15 days test using AE sensor, misalignment was observed. The detection results of the test were shown by the power spectrum and comparison of the harmonics level of the rotating speed. And the crack was seeded with 0.5 mm depth. During rotating the shaft, AE signals were acquired by AE sensor with 5MHz sampling frequency and 0.5 seconds storing time. The AE signals were transformed by FFT to create the power spectrums, and in the spectrums several peaks were occurred by the crack growth. Along the growth of the crack, the characteristic of the power spectrum was changed and displayed different frequencies.
