We easily access to all news from the opposite part of the earth thanks to highly developed science and civilization of the contemporary society. We might call this an era of media when we exchange information with countless people on a real-time basis. This development of science and civilization maximized human capacity, resulting in our preference of science to religion.
Churches in the Republic of Korea rapidly developed over one century, which gave a great surprise to the global religious community. However, there has been a rapid decrease since 2005. The reasons for this are diverse and the measures to this problem tend to remain complicated. Positive images of Korean churches have turned negatively, making more Christians leave and inviting criticisms from the society in general.
Korean churches are under pressure and aware of this crisis, leading to various efforts for recovery. However, the author would like to suggest good alternatives based on recognition of the necessity for spirituality. There are three reasons for Korean churches to recover their spirituality. First, it is because we still have religious characters and spirituality. While modern people benefit from sciences and civilizations and enjoy physical affluence, they have this emptiness in their hearts. This is because Korean churches are considered to have failed to fill these spiritual blanks of modern people exhausted from absence of warmth in science and civilization. Second, Korean churches have failed to fill this spirituality pursued by modern people. Rather, they have become too secular to provide any spiritual norms. Churches, whether seen from inside or outside, seem to be secularized groups obsessed to grow and expand only rather than spiritual communities. Korean churches need to return to their spirituality to overcome this excessive secularization. Third, Korean churches need to grow spiritually, too. The analysis by Lee Won-gyu maintains that the reason for prosperity of Christianity in Asia, Africa, and South Africa as well as the loss of power of European churches originates from differences in terms of 'intelligence and spirituality (religious sensibility)'. This means that European Christianity as the center of intelligence and reason has declined while Christianity in Asia, Africa, and South America has risen with their specific emphasis on spirituality and religious sensibility. Therefore, Korean churches must return to their original spirituality to gain back their previous growth, which constitutes the third reason for them to recover spirituality.
Additionally, the author suggested the necessity and method to promote honest poverty as a way to recover spirituality. Firstly, the author described honest poverty with the biblical backgrounds as well as church history. Both the New and Old Testaments describe honest poverty. Honest poverty in the Old Testament can be confirmed through the idea of ‘Year of Jubilee’. The rules pertaining to Year of Jubilee can be confirmed in the Pentateuch. While the rules may differ slightly, the essential meaning can be said to be the same. The rules originate from the sabbatical year, or God's order to allow the entire nature including the earth to take a rest based on the order of Creation. These rules are extended to care about socially vulnerable classes and poor people.
The Pentateuch in the Old Testaments says that people may lose their land and become poor but this poverty will not be permanent. It says that the Israeli shall regain their freedom and equality to make an equal start. Based on this, the idea of Year of Jubilee shall be a norm containing social reforms to recover the distorted social orders in Israel.
Honesty poverty in the New Testament can be found mainly in gospels, especially, the Gospel according to Saint Luke which takes guards against wealth and warns the rich. On the other hand, it takes special interest in poor people. Jesus Christ orders his disciples to give up possession and maintains the necessity for poor life. Also, it instructs abstention from personal wealth and pursuit of life participating in distributing personal wealth to the poor.
The biblical life of honest poverty has always been present in the history of churches. Ascetics in the deserts of the early Christianity chose to abandon possession voluntarily to complete their pursuit and lived away from all desires. Wealth was harmful to them. St. Anthony is such a representative. However, fathers of the church of the same era focused on distributing wealth and stressed life helping neighbors by using wealth.
Saint Francisco in the middle ages gave up possession to practice his wish to follow Jesus Christ wholly. The abandonment of possession is similar to that of ascetics in the deserts. However, considering that Francisco gave up possession to take after Jesus Christ, there is a difference from the latter.
Luther the reformer maintained that legal institutions should be arranged to help the poor while Calvin stressed the needs to use all the accumulated wealth for neighbors with an aim to take after Jesus Christ. John Wesley found that making money as much as possible was to help the poor.
John Wesley practiced distribution of money to the poor after deducting a certain amount for himself regardless of the amount of money earned, which constituted honest poverty.
There are traces of honest poverty in this history of Korean churches, too. Reverend. Han Gyeong-jik is the representative of honest poverty. His utmost task was 'love for neighbors'. He was never hesitant to give to neighbors even when hunger made him suffer. His practice and life of honest poverty was aimed at sharing love with more neighbors.
As described, honest poverty has always been practiced in the history of Christianity. As time and social circumstances changed, the methods and emphases changed, too. Still, the pursuit of honest poverty and its aim to help the poor never changed.
