A Study on the Narrative Transformation in Cinematizing the Novels : Focusing on Cheong-jun Lee’s The Story of Bugs and Munyol Yi’s The Anonymous Island원문보기

Abstract A Study on the Narrative Transformation in Cinematizing the Novels : Focusing on Cheong-jun Lee’s The Story of Bugs and Munyol Yi’s The Anonymous Island Koh, Eun Jeong Department of Korean Language and Literature Graduate School of Kwangju Women’s University This thesis proposes to explore the ways in which the characteristics of the movie genre change the narrative when novels are cinematized and the significance of this change. Despite their different methods of expression, novels and movies have long been closely related because they share one crucial common denominator: They are both narratives. And this makes it possible to compare the two different media within the same category. If novelistic narratives are expressed through written language, cinematic narratives are shown through action, dialogue, music, and sound. Whereas a novel is an art of language created by a writer, a movie is a visual art created by means of narratives and images on the two-dimensional screen. These fundamental differences between the two genres, novels and movies, inevitably result in narrative transformations when the former is turned into the latter. In today’s increasingly digital era, the visual media is growing in its importance and becoming one of the most sought after methods of popular expression and consumption. As a consequence, the desire to consume literary texts along with their cinematic visual images is becoming stronger. In this study I examine not only the characteristics and differences between novels and movies in relation to narration and reception, but also the transformation of the narratives when novels are adapted into movies. In this thesis I analyze the novels The Story of Bugs written by Cheong-jun Lee and The Anonymous Island by Munyol Yi, and their respective movie versions Milyang directed by Chang-dong Lee and The Foggy Village by Kwon-taek Im. Chapter Two deals with the changes in narrative methods that occur when these novels are cinematized. Contents from the novels and the corresponding movies are classified according to events of the stories, and the transformations in the general content and the components of the narratives that occur are discussed. In the third Chapter, I explore character, setting, and plot changes in the film versions of these novels. In terms of character transformation, Milyang alters the original novel’s rather abstract characters into multi-dimensional and concrete ones, thus increasing the narrativity of the movie. On the other hand, The Foggy Village highlights certain characters and adds their counterparts in order to increase dramatic interest and tension. The setting change for the movie Milyang, from the original novel’s vague location to a “real” city of Milyang, contribute to the materialization of the image of the setting. In The Foggy Village, the novelistic places are adapted to the characteristics of the movie, thus becoming more concrete than in the original novel. As for the transformation in plot, the movie Milyang, whose original novel is rather ideationally thematized, creates a new narrative by enlarging and expanding on narrative motifs, and changing the viewpoint along the way. Likewise, thanks to the intensified activity of the characters, the movie The Anonymous Island becomes a magnificent visual spectacle successfully changing the rather explanatory narration of the original novel into more cubistic, dynamic images. The aforementioned comparisons between the original novels and their respective movie versions show that both movies transfer into images the ideational characteristics of the original novels in a variety of ways. In its movie version, the idealism of the thematic description of The Story of Bugs obtains greater concreteness and narrativity. On the other hand, the already high narrativity of The Anonymous Island becomes more dramatically tense because of its visual spectacularity in the process of cinematization. The diverse attempts to blur the boundaries between novels and movies do not necessarily mean copying and retelling the original text, but opening the possibility of active reinterpretation of the original work. In addition, experiencing the same narrative in more than one artistic genre will surely lead to a better understanding of literature and art, and enrichment of emotions. In doing so, both genres will affect each other positively and more value will be added in the process. Furthermore, this synergy effect can serve as a driving force to create more narratives. It is not desirable to try to judge which genre is better or more useful than the other - novels or their movie versions - considering that they can complement each other and enlarge their respective territories, thus providing the possibility of mutual interpretation from a new perspective. Such attempts will ultimately extend the domain of literature and diversify our experiences of narratives. Key words : the novel, the movie, The Story of Bugs, The Anonymous Island, cinematization, narrative transformation
